From the little time I spend watching TV, I got the impression that Thais are pretty much up-to-date with Western TV programs. You won't catch me in front of the TV though; Thailand has a knack of making real life much more interesting than any TV-shows.

In some ways, we are. But I am afraid that advanced technology is still considered somewhat of a novelty, a luxury around here. All the above-mentioned examples are found in Bkk, Chiang Mai, and other big, touristy cities, and most locals don't use them, even if they have access to them. For one thing, those fancy features are very expensive, in terms of average local wages. (you can bet that a noodle stall owner won't blow half of her monthly income on the privilege of sitting in one of the fanciest movie theater seats!) For another thing, Thailand is more than Bangkok, Pattaya and Chiang Mai. If one ventures out to see the real country, one will see none, or very little of anything that could resemble "modern" technology.

Now please excuse me; I need to scoop some ice-cold water for my morning shower... I just hope water runs today.

Well to clarify a bit....I still see Dawson's Creek, and Friends in the USA. Heh I still see the Wonder Years, Cosby, Sanford & Son, and Good Times for that matter, you know on PBS you can even watch the Lawerence Welk Show if you like. To say they are behind is possibly jumping a gun. In regards to technology maybe that is what you mean? Digital cable features, Digital Phone through your cable lines, or high(er) speed broadband access?

Cable TV is full of reruns of ancient shows though, the fact that Dawson's Creek is still running in Thailand on 'cable' does not mean much considering it is still running in the US on Lifetime, Oh, We, Hallmark etc...

My opinion anyway

No way, if you hadn't mentioned it, I would've never thought to ask about technology, so THANK YOU! Thank you both for helping me solve the mystery of Thailand's entertainment and technological industry.

PS: I didn't know you could pay your bills through ATMs! *shock* But then again, I don't pay the bills. Also, I agree, Thai movie theatre are amazing. MY cousin took me to see Men In Black II a long time ago and the theatre was GIGANTIC!!! It must've streached a mile away...

I think in some ways we are more advanced in technology. I know we have had visitors from the States that have been impressed with our movie theatres here saying that they are more comfortable and modern than theatres back home. We have visitors at the moment and I can give you a few more examples of why they said "wow we don't have that back home". One was using the ATM to pay bills or transfer from your bank account to a bank account belonging to someone else in a different bank. Oh yes, one of them went to a golf driving range and was surprised that he didn't have to put the ball on the tee as it was done automatically.

I think what is happening here is that places like America have been doing things like this for years. Then countries like Thailand come along and build movie theatres and golf courses and of course they are going to use all the latest technology available. Whereas back in the States, many places there won't bother to upgrade their equipment with new technology if what they have already works well.

Going back to your original question, with most t.v. programs we are probably only a year behind. However, with Hollywood movies, sometimes they are released here before they are in America. Other times they are released within the same week or two.

LOL can you tell my wife is the only one in my house to watch the television lol Lifetime, Oh, We, Hallmark. Once every couple weeks I get an hour I can watch SpikeTV or Fox News, but when the TV is on it is on her drama channels yes. I agree alot with Sawatdee's statement in regards to technology, there are dozens of things in Thailand that impressed me but seem so ordinary to Thailand. It is very shocking considering that the USA used to be the single most materialistic country in the world, wanting everything to be 'cutting edge' and having it before anyone else. The ATM options being foremost on my list.

I didn't mean to get off subject with technology I simply assumed that was where the question was directed more so than the prime-time lineup on television. I am sorry for trying to read too deeply into the question.

They are showing re-runs of Dawson's Creek at the moment. Friends is at present halfway through Season X though it is already out on DVD here. Shows like Survivor are shown live at the same time as in America.

Wow, I don't even know half of those shows. Anyway, in America, the shows are re-run, I totally understand, but in Thailand, isn't it still considered new and people still look forward to seeing them? Also, what's usually on Lifetime, Oxygen, We, Hallmark, aren't those women channels? I only watch Missing on Lifetime and The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Oh because I have school during the day and can't watch it in the daytime.

Ps: I don't really think Thailand has slow technology, well, maybe a little. My mommy said that electronics stuff from Japan sometimes goes to Thailand before they even come to America.

Default Thai cable tv
I'm a really big fan of television and i was once told that Thai cable tv is way behind the Americans cable. Is it true, and if it is, how far behind is it? Someone told me they are still showing Dawson's Creek! *gasp!* That show is already over in America! Please fill me in...
