Be aware......Many cooked dishes are sweetened unlike western food.
Whether with raw sugar, corn syrup or another sweetener I can't say. I will guess it's with cane sugar though. Some major food chain stores with English language web sites findable with google are: Tesco Lotus Foodland Bic C Carrefour Villa Mart Perhaps you can check their locations against you travel plans and/or get an email off to them for assistance. |

Fine post Jake, that is exactly what he is looking for I think.
You noted a very important point I never even considered, yes many main courses are sweet as what we in USA would consider a desert dish. Some noodle dishes, and even beef and pork will be very ..... 'candied' I gues is what we would call it. I know the Philipino style red beef is very sweet with cane sugar. and my wife uses white sugar when she is making some noodles. Not sure about other types of sugars though. |

I am not sure of the disorder, are you permitted fresh fruits? Fresh fruits depending on sugar count? Obviously an orange or a strawberry with have much high sugar count then a papaya or crabapple for example.
Thailand is not big on added sugar, or most of the time when sugar is added it is cane sugar or honey. The sweet things in Thailand usually are no where near how richly sweet the cakes, breads, cookies, and candies are in the USA. My wife spit the snicker's bar bite I gave her out, she said it was so sweet she nearly got sick. Yet I try her sweet snacks, they are dried mangos or tamarinds, even rice cakes. They have no sugar I can taste at all. It depends on where exactly you are coming from I think. If in Belgium sweets are very rich, you will likely be just fine in Thailand. I know here many people have a difficult time estimating just how much sugar is in certain foods, but we are simply immune to it we have demanded such for so long. Does your doctor think that fresh fruits would be ok? I suggest talking to a doctor. Hopefully some people will reply here with some experience. Welcome to the forums! |

Thanks for the answer! Fruit is ok except bananas and some other fruit (because it contains lots of sugar). She (of course) has consulted a doctor yet, but he can't answer her practical questions. She certainly needs brown bread and nuts (not cashew or pinda). Are there some big hypermarkets where you could find these sorts of 'natural' or 'biological' products? In Europe you find shops like this everywhere...

Outside of the tourist areas no not really, I am sure there are dozens in Bangkok, Chiang Mai may have a few, Pattaya may have a couple as well. But if you are heading away from the tourist areas, you will likely have trouble finding it. Are starches or carbohydrates harmful as well or is it simply the sugar?
As far as organic groceries, that is all you will find in Thailand, that is whay I am asking. I really don't foresee many health issues due to the food. It is all very fresh and very natural. I would suggest avoiding some fruits, mango can get very very high in sugar for example. But to answer the question without being a resident, I would go with no fear, as soon as you arrive in bkk, ask the taxi driver to take you to a really big rahmkah. |
