Are there any expats here who have obtained a thailand drivers license? How does an expat obtain one?
I also have another question about vehicles in Thailand. I have never see a car/truck/motorcycle in the Kingdom that has an automatic transmission? Do they exist or will I have to learn to drive stick? |

Quote[/b] ]I spend ten bucks every year on an IDP (http://www.aaa.com/Vacation/idpf.html) but no one has ever asked for it Quote[/b] ]I think when you get there you will buy a used scooter for 7-10K THB and learn to ride it. They are really easy; again it is like a bicycle that you don't have to pedal. Don't forget to ride on the left !! An IDP is a good short-term solution but what if I was going to spend the rest of my life in Thailand? Wouldn't I need a more offical ID?? |

Yes, you can apply for a Thai driving license. They now give 5 years. From what I heard, different provinces have different rules about what you need to bring along. An IDP might be a good idea to show them. You will need to apply for this before you leave your country. Get your girlfriend to go along with you to find out what you need.
