At least 25 people have been killed and 30 others injured in a fire at a firecracker factory in Sivakasi in Tamil Nadu. The mishap happened at the Om Cracker factory in Mudalipetti, near Sivakasi on Wednesday afternoon and authorities fear that the death toll could rise as many people have suffered severe burn injuries.

Around 300 people were trapped inside the factory when the fire broke out and many of them are still unaccounted for.
The factory had 40 rooms with several of them acting as godowns for firecrackers and chemicals. All the rooms caught fire, but since all the rooms were on ground floor so many of the workers managed to escape.


Ten fire tenders are trying to douse the fire, with fire brigade sources saying that it has been brought under control.
Police and fire brigade personnel have not yet managed to enter the building due to heavy smoke. They also fear that the large amount of firecrackers kept inside the factory could again catch fire.
