The recently announced re-exam of one paper for the first-year engineering students has put their seniors in a bit of a soup.
All second, third and last year students of private engineering colleges are still awaiting their results which, say sources, are being held, and will be released only after the re-exam papers are evaluated. While final-year students with no arrears have been lucky and have already got their results, those with even one arrear in the earlier years have to wait for some time. “Many of us have either plans of travelling abroad early next month or joining a company soon. Neither of this is possible without the results.” The delay, suspect sources, has been because a re-exam for the Electronic Design and Circuit for the first-year students has been announced to take place on July 31. This was because of a leak due to which the paper was available on the internet hours before the exam, sources say. “Normally the eight semester results are out by June end which gives students who are planning to travel abroad just about enough time to get ready, reach the university, find jobs and settle down,” says Aarthi Anjaneya, a parent. “Most of who are travelling for the fall admissions are scheduled to leave August first week. The tickets are booked and non-refundable,” she adds. The students say while some have cancelled their tickets, many have written to their students’ counsellors abroad, requesting a few weeks’ time. “Universities are also getting very strict and they don’t encourage such request,” says a student. Those in a fix also include students who are to take up jobs. While many already have their joining dates nearing, some have also missed it. “My joining was on July 15. I have postponed it by a month because they said the provisional certificate is must,” says R. Jayalakshmi, a student, who got recruited by an IT firm. “IT companies have training in batches. Since I have missed the first batch, I can join only in October. This delay at a time of market uncertainty is not good for my career,” she adds. Meanwhile, off-campus recruitments by IT companies have already begun. “Those without a job through campus placement have to depend solely on these recruitments. You cannot even sit for the written exam without your results,” says a student. Anna University officials have asked the students not to panic. “We are trying to release the results as soon as possible. They should be out by August first week,” said a source. Source: The Hindu |
