Residents and motorists in north Chennai are irked over the inordinate delay in the construction of the much-awaited Mint flyover and Stanley levelcrossing subway.
Mayor Saidai S. Duraisamy had inspected the bridge four months ago and ordered the officials to speed up the project but nothing much has progressed since then, said corporation insiders.08_07_2012_002_036_008.jpg The Rs.23 crore four-lane flyover at Mint would connect Old Jail Road and Basin Bridge Road. The government had sanctioned the project in July 2009 and the work order was issued in 2010, but the bridge has a long way to go for completion, sources said. The AIADMK council has failed to announce any new major bridges to decongest north Chennai and even the bridge work started during the DMK regime are facing inordinate delay, former mayor M. Subramanian said. The Mint flyover is a long pending demand of north Chennai residents and the former deputy chief minister M.K Stalin was keen on constructing flyovers to decongest north Chennai. Senior officials of the corporation should conduct more site inspections and speed up the bridge work, he said. A senior corporation official attributed the delay to the shifting of metro water pipelines and the land acquisition row. “The contractor has till the end of this year to complete the work but we plan to complete the 508 metre long and 15 metre wide Mint bridge in three months, the official said.
