After almost a month of blistering heat, Chennai got a respite as the day temperature dropped to 37.1 degree Celsius on Saturday.

The weather observatory at Meenambakkam recorded the same temperature, which is one degree less than the normal temperature for the month. Other areas such as Chembarampakkam and Sholinganallur registered slightly lower temperature with 35 degree Celsius. The stations in Puzhal and Poonamallee recorded 35.6 degree Celsius.

The dip in the temperature and overcast sky has come as a relief to residents who were reeling under scorching heat for the past few weeks. The temperature touched 41.2 degree Celsius in both Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam on Friday. This is the highest for the month recorded in the past six years.

The mercury level had earlier peaked to 41.6 degree Celsius on June 18, 2005. Last year, it had touched the highest of 38.6 degree Celsius on June 22.

Officials of the meteorological department said that weather conditions are favourable for further advancement of southwest monsoon in the neighbouring States. As the monsoon is getting more active, it is also influencing the weather in Chennai.

Chennai has received only 2 cm of rainfall since January. However, it may be compensated in the coming months. The department forecasts that the Chennai and its suburbs may receive rain or thundershower during evening or night. The maximum temperature would be around 37 degree Celsius till Monday.
