Default 20-cr land turned into dumpyard
Dumping of garbage on a vacant land belonging to the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department (HR & CE) has created a lot of problems not only for local residents but also for road users.

The 1 acre 94 cent land of the Dhandeeswaram Temple, Velachery, located at the end of MGR Nagar Second Main Road and Venkateshwara Nagar.

Third Main Road, has turned into a mini garbage dump and the recent spell of rains has added to the locals’ woes.
“In today’s market value, the land is definitely worth more than `20 crore, but it’s being used as a dump-yard by the residents. Rainwater stagnates there for months and it contaminates the ground water,” complained local resident Mr O.Vijayaraman.

With garbage spilling over onto the roads, motorists and pedestrians find it tough to pass through the already congested road. “The temple land was given on lease for cultivation purposes to one Mr Sokkalinga Nayakkar. Till 1990 he occupied the land, but since then it has remained vacant. We, the residents, had requested the then Mayor M.Subramanian to use part of the land for road widening purposes as it connects the Velachery 100 Feet Road,” said Mr

Karuppaiah, a shopkeeper and resident of Venkateshwara Nagar. He added that so far no action had been taken.

“A lot of vehicles pass through the Venkateshwara Nagar Third Main Road as it connects the Velachery 100 Feet Road. We want the place to be used for some productive purpose and not just for garbage dumping,” he added. When contacted, executive officer of the Dhandeeswaram Temple, Mr R. Kesavarajan said

that there was a proposal to construct a marriage hall on the land and that talks were also on with the Corporation to use a part of the land as a linking road to the Velachery 100 Feet Road.

“While we offered the land for market value, the Corporation asked for a guideline value,” he said and added that though he hadn’t received any complaints regarding dumping of garbage and that he would take action soon in this regard.
