November 30 marks the 176th birthday of Mark Twain (he was born on November 30, 1835). Mark Twain had one of the sharpest tongues in literary history.
Google honoured him with a page-wide doodle on Wednesday. MarkTwain was believed to have said: "Concerning the difference between man and the jackass: Some observers hold that there isn't any. But this wrongs the jackass." He wrote the book "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" (nearly 125 years ago). Ernest Hemingway said:"All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called 'Huckleberry Finn,'- It's the best book we've had. All American writing comes from that. There was nothing before. There has been nothing as good since." MarkTwain Quotes on India: "India is, the cradle of the human race, the birthplace of human speech, the mother of history, the grandmother of legend, and the great grand mother of tradition. our most valuable and most instructive materials in the history of man are treasured up in India only." "So far as I am able to judge, nothing has been left undone, either by man or nature, to make India the most extraordinary country that the sun visits on his rounds. Nothing seems to have been forgotten, nothing overlooked." "India has two million gods, and worships them all. In religion all other countries are paupers; India is the only millionaire." Rudyard Kipling is supposed to have said:"East is East and West is West, and never the twain shall meet." Someone else responded: "East is East and West isWest, and finally (Mark) Twain have met." |
