The next time you plan to host a party, don’t run to the grey market to buy expensive scotch at nonnegotiable price. Be it Remy Martin or Black Label or a long list of wines, everything would be available in authentic Tasmac outlets soon.
To cater to the high-end customers, the monopoly retail seller, Tasmac, has come out with an idea to sell expensive scotch at posh shopping malls. The ‘Elite Shops’ will be coming up in a fortnight at malls like Express Avenue and Spencer’s to cater to the elite customers who were hesitant to walk into the otherwise ugly Tasmac outlets. According to a GO issued by home secretary Rameshram Misra, during the review by chief minister J.Jayalalithaa, a decision was taken to open 800 more Tasmac shops across the state in addition to the existing 6,700 shops, in a phased manner. Of the 800,about 200 will be Elite Shops and they will be opened in all cities and district headquarters. Official sources said the Elite Shops would sell French brandy brands such as Remy Martin, St Remy, Cointreau 700, UK Gin Gordon, Smirnoff red vodka, Johny Walker Red Label and Black Label, besides a host of premium IMFL varieties and imported wines. “We are in the process of identifying the right locations. We have already tied up with some bonded warehouses to get the scotch. All the Elite Shops will be provided with billing machines,” a senior official told DC. According to a rough estimate, as much as Rs. 200 crore worth of Scotch was being sold in the grey market and half of the liquor may not be genuine. “The idea sounds good. The authorities should ensure rates are at par with the duty-free shops at airports, otherwise it will not serve the purpose,” remarked a connoisseur. -dc chn |
