Default TN-unenviable 15,400 road fatalities
After 15,400 fatalities in TN roads last year, a journalistic twist gives a true perspective to reduce fatalities? The statistics is of last year meaning the year 2010. We have to wait until end of this year to know the number of dead in road accidents in 2011.

Soon GPS-enabled devices are going to be provided to all police stations that would help the police to now record how many people died and how? What a great idea to be developed with the collaboration World Bank to monitor how people die in road accidents. What will be the cost of this development? Of course we do not know yet.

When the bill is presented it won’t be cheap and for the purpose of statistics we will know how many more are dead at the end of each year. Of course we need statistics to show we are at it. Hard work?

Do we need the World Bank to develop methods to prevent accidents on our roads? we hear news about home grown terrorists. Don't we have home grown intelligence? Can we also develop a method to record how often bribes are paid to get away from the scene of accidents?

Accidents happen mostly due to human error. Poor unqualified driving lessons, the craze to get ahead, drivers not adhering to road rules, awareness of road conditions, lack of well-constructed roads and undisciplined pedestrians are a just a few reasons why accidents do happen.

Well my voice will never be heard and the World Bank is just not stone’s throw away. Read below the news covered by the Times of India

TN shows way to lower road accident fatalities

New Delhi: Some states are on a course correction to change India's image as the home to the maximum number of fatalities in road accidents in the world. These states are collecting data to identify the reasons behind road accidents.

Tamil Nadu, which notched up an unenviable record of 15,400 road fatalities last year - the highest in India - will soon provide GPS-enabled hand-held devices to all police stations that will help police personnel record the data instantly from accident spots.

Earlier, Tamil Nadu had introduced Road Accident Data Management System (RADMS), software that generates information on accidents for all the roads in the state. The RADMS has been developed in collaboration with the World Bank.
