Eng student in TN killed by classmate
CUDDALORE: A second-year mechanical engineering student of Annamalai University in Chidambaram was murdered by his classmate on Tuesday after a party where they consumed alcohol and drugs, police said. Dhruba Jyoti Dutta (18) from Assam was hit on the head with a log. Dutta, who shared a rented house with five students, hosted a party and invited two of his classmates, Rakesh Roshan and Ankit Kumar, both hailing from Bihar. Late-night party turns bloody. Police said the students were addicted to inhaling volatile substances to get a high besides consuming liquor and other drugs. During the party that began on Monday evening, the students went out of control and became quarrelsome. Trouble erupted when Roshan made derogatory remarks against Dutta's girlfriends hailing from his state. Dutta forced Roshan and Kumar to leave the house immediately after a heated argument around midnight. Feeling insulted, Roshan and Kumar came to Dutta's house again around 2.30 am on Tuesday. When Dutta refused to open the door, Roshan pelted stones at the window panes. Dutta came out after hearing the noise and Roshan, who managed to get hold of a log, hit him on his head. Dutta sustained severe bleeding injuries in the head. He was rushed to Rajah Muthaiah Medical College cum Hospital where the doctors on duty declared him brought dead. Annamalai Nagar police registered a case against the two Bihar students and arrested them. ASP M Durai told TOI that police seized huge quantities of whitener and thinner from Dutta's rented house. "We suspect that all the students are addicted to drugs and used to inhale vapours from whiteners and thinners. The deceased had invited his friends, including the two accused, for the party that began around 7pm on Monday. The students got embroiled in a wordy duel leading to the crime," Durai said. In August this year, police had cracked the whip on African students of the university who were hosting late-night parties in the temple town. Police had forcibly sent the students, who gathered at a wedding hall claiming to attend a 'prayer meeting' but consumed alcohol and danced to the tunes of loud African music, away.
