The city crime branch police arrested seven persons, including former transport minister and DMK district secretary K.N. Nehru, former MLA Anbil Periyasamy and Tiruchy corporation deputy mayor M. Anbazhagan here on Thursday on the charge of forcibly acquiring a piece of land from a doctor for constructing the party's district office, `Kalaignar Arivalayam', in Tiruchy.
Based on a complaint from Dr K. Srinivasan of Thuraiyur, city crime branch police registered a case under several sections of the IPC, and arrested Mr Nehru and three others. Mr Nehru, known to be M.K. Stalin's loyalist, becomes the third minister from the previous DMK regime to be taken into custody in the continuing crackdown by the AIADMK government on land-grabbing. The other two are Mr Veerapandi S. Arumugam and Mr N.K.K.P.Raja. Dr Srinivasan complained that 13,920 square feet of his land was encroached upon and later taken over by Mr Nehru and 10 others. `Kalaignar Arivalayam' was declared open by former CM M. Karunanidhi in September 2008. The building is spread over about 56,000 sq ft and the value of the portion of land held by Dr Srinivasan's family was estimated at `10 crore, the police said. Dr Srinivasan claimed that he was forced to sign an unregistered agreement for the “sale“ of his land. Though an advance of `40 lakh was paid, DMK men later robbed the money, he said. He also alleged that he was again taken to Mr Nehru's office on Sept. 7, 2007 when he and his wife were made to sign a sale deed in favour of Mr Nehru on behalf of the party. The deed was registered without paying any compensation. Mr Nehru and others were picked up after a preliminary investigation. He, along with Mr Periyasamy and Mr Sundarajalu, owner of a textile retail outlet in Tiruchy, were produced before judicial magistrate IV Pushpanai at her house and remanded in judicial custody till Sept. 8. They were later sent to Cuddalore central prison. Four other accused, Mr Anbazhagan, Mr Kudamurutti Sekar, Mr Sheriff and Mr Mamundi, were taken into custody later. |
