The people of the state who have been reeling under acute power cuts will get some respite from July 1 this year, with the state government deciding to reduce the duration of load shedding by an hour.
“From July 1, the scheduled three hours load shedding will be reduced to two hours. Gradually, the situation will be improved to make Tamil Nadu free from power cuts,” chief minister J. Jayalalithaa announced on Friday. Replying to a debate on the motion of thanks to the Governor for his address to the House, Ms Jayalalithaa said her government would create an additional capacity of 10,000 MW in the next five years to make Tamil Nadu a power surplus state. Accusing the previous DMK government for the power crisis in the state, she said the DMK government failed to implement various power generation programmes sanctioned by her government during 2001 to 2006. As a result there was shortage of power. During 2001-2006, Tamil Nadu was free from power cuts. “We will attain more installed capacity making surplus power during our period,” she said and added that improper maintenance or no maintenance of thermal power plants during the DMK regime also led to shortage.
