The state-owned Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation Limited (Tasmac) has proposed to open elite wine shops in major cities to sell choicest liquor items to its high-end customers.
Tasmac sources said these shops would be designed giving importance to ambience so that rich customers too can drop in without any inhibition and purchase the choicest varieties on sale. An official said only premium brands would be made available in the elite shops. At present, most of the Tasmac shops are ordinary petty shops situated in localities where connoisseurs of liquor would hesitate to visit for a buy. The decision was disclosed at a meeting of regional and district managers chaired by Tasmac managing director D.Vivekanandan in Chennai recently. With whopping revenue of over `12,000 crore from Tasmac, the new govern ment is keen to improve the facilities in its outlets and augment its income further. The officials have been asked not to stock goods unnecessarily and cause loss to the government. They have been instructed to sell beer varieties on the shelf within three days and other items such as brandy and whisky within a week. The official said joint patrolling along with police and excise officials would be undertaken frequently hereafter and sale of adulterated stuff would be severely dealt with. Closure of any wine shop could be done only with the permission of the MD. Irregularities such as sale of liquor for a price higher than the fixed price would be weeded out. The staff have been promised handsome incentives as rewards for their `committed service', sources said. To curtail the practice of unnecessary transfer of employees, the new board has instructed that transfer could be effected only with permission of regional managers. - - - DC Chennai |
