"Namely, where should the zanshin be if you hit on the kote but miss the men?"

Nowhere, as it wont score if you miss the men.

For me, it depends on the intention: If I intent to cut kote-men, I will do both cuts, but sometimes when I go for kote, I will miss the kote, but the opponent will leave an opening for the men, which I will then attack.

Alex, your zanshin should start before the opportunity to cut is initiated and finish only after you have gone through and turned around to face your opponent again.

In a shiai, if you attempt a men after a kote, you have shown that you do not believe the kote was a success, therefore the kote will not be scored (even if it was good). However the men might be scored, if all the elements existed. If the men was no good but the kote was good - bad luck.

Zanshin is a state of mind, or for some of us, a display of how we would like our state of mind to be (!) it is not something to turn on and off.

But if you haven't shown it your cut is not a yuko datotosu.

All the elements of yuko datotosu are required in order to get the shinpans to put the flags up.

Practice often to improve your kote men technique, because then you can do it if and when it is appropriate.

Thanks for your input. Kote-men now feels like a rip-off: Get the kote without the men and no ippon (I have enough difficulty getting either one by themselves let alone both in succession...). Your answers also confirmed my suspicions.
If I understand this properly the point of kote-men really seems to be to get the men (the kote being somewhat "optional" since the men will be given regardless of whether or not there was ippon on kote): i.e. If you want to get kote just do kote.
And yes, I also use the kote as a "feint" to get men-uchi. Works pretty well sometimes....and other times I just trip over my hakama.

Indeed. If the kote lands and even so you gor for the men strike and misses, the kote will not be valid. So, you can go wherever you want to, it won't matter anyway,

I have a hard time using renzoku waza as well. So, as Jakob says, there are two option at the beginning of waza. The first one is when you intend the kote strike to be valid, but due to ai-uchi (simult. strike) or to a wrong blow or a small dodge/parry it does not connect, then you have to step again and strike the men. The second one is when you want the men strike to be the valid point, then you just strike in the direction of kote but not worrying about where or how it will land. You just the opponent to deviate the kensen from the center so you strike his shomen.

Default Zanshin for kote-men
I have a question concerning zanshin during kote-men uchi (I'm assuming it's an uchi). Namely, where should the zanshin be if you hit on the kote but miss the men? Is the ippon still valid if your zanshin comes after the men even if the men hit misses? I'm not sure I'm makingthis clear.
The reason I ask is that if your mind set is to go kote-men, as opposed to just go kote, then I don't have the time or reflexes (I'm slow and stupid...bite me) to stop mid-motion and start my zanshin right after the kote gets in. I simply go kote, then men and keep my zanshin for after the men even if it (the men) does not connect. Does anyone know how this is supposed to be scored?
Hope this does better than my last thread.
