My feeling is it shouldn't stick out much further than the back edge of the men. But as you say, some men are deeper than others, and some heads are fatter...

Hi sup.
I have worked part-time at a budo shop here in northern Japan and I have gotten questions from international customers all the time about their men size. Ben is absolutely correct in saying that your head should not shake from side-to-side and likewise it should not shake up and down. The chin should lot elevate from where it should sit as well. When you buy a men you should of course have your face sized up. That's a sure way in knowing that you'll get something that fits right. The men should be snug at first but not big when you buy it. Keep in mind that it will stretch a bit.

If you find that your men is too big then on Ben's suggestion, yes I would also say to get a chin pad. It seems to take some space and also it helps to take up the sweat !!

Default How big is your men?
IMHO your chin should touch the bottom of the men even with your mouth closed, but it shouldn't be tight or hard to open your mouth. Also, your men shouldn't slip around on your head at all when you shake it side-to-side. This is what works for me.

On another thread we were talking about the virutes of removable chin inserts/handkershiefs for absorbing sweat. These can also be used for padding out any excess room you might have in there. Conversely, a men insert or pad at the top of the men can do the same thing and add some protection to an old men. If addition of either of these things is still not enough, then your men is way too big.

Sup: probably even more important than whether you can open your mouth, is whether you are seeing through the right slot in the mengane. Of course, you want to make sure the men fits on nice and snug, but if it fits so that your eyes are looking out the wrong slot, a lot of bad habits can develop...eg. your head always tilted forward looking at the ground, etc.

Along similar lines, can someone answer this:

Should part of your head be sticking out the back of your men if it "fits"? Or should the men completely cover your head? Of course there are exceptions, but in general......?

Well, my actual men was snugly whe I bought it, but it has now expanded a bit, but if well-tightened it's confortable enough to open my mouth and still be in place. I am thinking about a pad to tighten it more, but chin pads seem too thin and the head pad I've seen (from e-bogu) is too big.

Yes it should not be sticking out too far. At most it should be flush with the back of the men.
