You can get fake tatami-looking mats from IKEA, if you have a store near you. Not real, but cheap.

I want to do the exact same with my room, have you got pictures of your room?, just curious to see how you have decorated it into a japanese style. Advice i can't remember the link but there was a brilliant German Website selling Tatami at less expensive prices, thanks to the Euro, but customs hmm may charge you abit. Try search engines with good keywords, the Tatami mat you looking at are a little small if you are thinking of replacing your carpet i would go for the bigger ones 90cm by 90cm, but it is very expensive.

There are mats that have the texture and similar construction of tatami with the woven plant material, but they lack being placed on whatever thick board goes underneath. They are called something like goza mats. I am not sure if it is the same as those IKEA mats mentioned, but they are authentic. We have a few. If you put some sort of rubber no slip matting underneath them, you have a sort of tatami room floor. It is not as comfortable because they are missing the thick board underneath, but it is the same construction as normal tatami, only not as thick.

Default Tatami
Hey guys,

I've been making a few changes to my room in the past few weeks. I've decided to add a more Japanese style to it so I tore down the wallpaper and painted the walls light brown and added a Kamiza in the corner as well as hanging up scrolls with Japanese calligraphy. Thing thats bugging me now is the carpet, at the moment it is an ugly bright red colour and I've been thinking of replacing it with Tatami mats. I've never been near Tatami in my life so I need a bit of Advice at the moment. What do you guys think of the Tatami :Tatami Cushion 30x40cm

No, I didn't find it on their webpage either. However I visited IKEA just the other day, and they had mats similar to tatami, for about £15-20. If you look on their website, and look up the rug named 'ristoft', or perhaps 'vedbaek' that's almost what they look like, but in a straw(?) material.

I lived in an old house in Japan for a while, and the majority of the rooms had tatami floors. While noting beats sleeping on tatami - you should know that it requires a lot of maintenance. It breaks down over time, and is a haven for bugs. We waxed/conditioned our tatami weekly, and had a special can of insecticide attached to a syringe that we would poke into the tatami to spray for bugs. Our house was old (60+ years) - and the tatami was well past it's prime. I dunno what the lifespan for tatami is - but it is SO expensive that most modern homes in japan have only 1 tatami room (if that) - and quite often the tatami is an artificial substitute.

There was a tatami maker down the street from the school I worked at, and he was struggling to survive in these modern times. PS - nothing in the world smells better that a fresh tatami mat!

We wanted to put tatami into our home here in Hawaii - but the humidity and bugs would really shorten it's lifespan - so we setteled for wood floors (also very japanese).
