I can only speak for my dojo, but we take it very seriously. That's not to say we don't enjoy a good laugh, or have high spirits. But if you are there to goof arround, you can expect to be asked to leave. We also have a high disaproval with people who take cheep shots (ie ear clips on purpose etc.). I think Honor is still there, but it's up to the school to uphold high standards.

I don't think the posts here are an accurate reflection of kendo culture. I'd suggest you visit a dojo and see whether you like it or not.

even though my taekwondo club is strict, when it comes to competition many of the oppenents i have faced have been extremely aggressive, unfriendly and they have the "Big Bull Syndrome", this is where the oppenent cannot control the power into his techniques.

master actualy showed us his solution for people like that. I was doing it on accident, and i still got my chimes rung once or twice.

And no, the posts here are not typical of most people who do kendo/kumdo. I do however, very strongly beleive in the dicipline factor. As far as im concerned, if master isnt correcting but two or three things, i must be doing good

I'd have to say that I agree with Neil. People are always a little less reserved on the internet, whatever their interests. Also, I'd warn against over-romanticizing the past. Not everybody was a paragon of virtue back then either.

You never, ever, ever "correct" sensei on things like Ki, If you dont like it leave.
I cant imagine someone doing that..........that would be rude from a western standpoint, much less the eastern philosiphy on honor and discipline....jeez....

Hey.... as long as you dont get crazy people you'll be fine.

I may very well feel the need to "correct" his teachings to the class.

Well with that said:

Sorry i didn't mean 2 sterotype all Kendoka, but i think alot more discipline is need in more dojos, especially in my Judo Club lol, im an assistant instructor there, even though i only get 15 mins out of the Hour instructing each lesson i make sure it is very disciplined, and again im not slagging off the Judo Population just some instructors who approach teaching in a "sloppy" fashion. Yes of course everyone is not perfect and im sure i was over romancinising abit, but i believe more discipline is required as Martial Arts in my opinion are not just exercise it's more a life style than anything.

Have Budo Martial Arts got tainted by Modernisation and Western Culture?, im not moaning so anyone offended i 100% apoligise, i have been looking at many posts especially "GET OUT OF MY DOJO", and i see people acting extremely cocky, i believe martial arts are getting taken as just another form of exercise, such as Judo, at the moment i am still attending my Judo Club, from the age of 8 i have seen more and more new students acting up and not being disciplined, do you think that Western Instructors should be more strict, or do you believe this quote "Show the children the fun aspect of the martial art and the way of the martial art will follow", that said from a Kendo Instructor. I have tried around 6 different martial arts, 3 have orginated from Japan, but mainly i do taekwondo, and i have to admit, even though my taekwondo club is strict, when it comes to competition many of the oppenents i have faced have been extremely aggressive, unfriendly and they have the "Big Bull Syndrome", this is where the oppenent cannot control the power into his techniques. Is martial arts evolving into just a sport instead of gaining honor by victories, i might sound like a Klingon lol, but is Modernisation and the loss of the culture in many instructors the downfall to some martial arts club, i would appreicate any views u hav

Thanks for reading
