Not that it will do any good, but I sent a complaint to eBay about it. I reminded them that kendo is from an entirely different culture than Western Europe or the New World, and that we should not be disrespectful of that culture. The use of the woman in this picture is clearly disrespectful to kendo, to the shinai and the katana it represents, and to Japanese culture.

What possible connection is there between the shinai and this woman in the picture, other than it's obvious that she's of Asian descent? Shame on the seller, not eBay, but maybe they'll act on it.

You know, if you flood the seller with enough complaints, they'll maybe get the message that they shouldn't be using pictures like that, and if you complain enough to eBay, maybe they'll gently nudge the seller in the right direction. If we just ignore it, it will not go away, it will just get worse.
i entirely agree with you on that one..hello im quite new here, i have just registered recently i have been studying japanese history and bushido for quite a number of years on my own of course and i have been practising sunburi on my own as well for the reason that i canot find a dojo in my district and it is out of my reach.. so i rely heavily on books to study and have come to grasp the true meaning of swordsmanship and have come to respect its ideas and ways completely. to sell a product with such undecent is an offense on the japanese culture and i find it very intolerable! most of the good quality equipment is not often sold on ebay in fact the seller dont even know much about the items that they are selling thats y they sell it. if it was me ill treaure it and not exploit it.

This has been posted before, and morally I see nothing wrong with a hot chick selling me shinai's... but thats not the case here. It really isn't.

Not the best choice of words... ahem..
ROFL. My vote for post of the year.

I've seen similar kinds of things where a girl's wearing boxing gloves or something, and it doesn't make me think any worse of boxing. Like I say, I see where you're coming from, but if they happily do it in Japan, then I don't really see a problem (except for the unattractiveness of the girl).
Some may beg to differ that Kendo is not a sport like Boxing, but I agree with you. Though boxing people wear almost like underwear to do it, I obvisouly don't feel anything wrong if they wear swimsuits to box... but Kendo we got uniforms...

u·ni·form
n.

  1. A distinctive outfit intended to identify those who wear it as members of a specific group.
  2. One set of such an outfit.
Therefore, it's a different thing than boxing... the Japanese who did the swimsuits thingy also is as ignorant as the one who shot that chick's picture... not everyone in a county is respectful...

Maybe they are trying to increase the value of the Shinai. What was it going for? Some people out there may be thinking it is worth bidding for. People buy and sell ridiculous stuff on the net all the time... it's insane.
Hmmmmmm......Let me take a closer look at that shinai again.
Not sure the quality is all that good...

Oh, Mugu-san, how'd you come across that?

Kaoru
I was bored just surfing on ebay and I found it. And I also saw some people have no idea what's a Shinai is and they want to sell it as an antique or a fun collection. I have fun reading those

I would have to say that the girl has had her day in the sun and now is the time to go in to the shadows.
Kinda like mayonnaise... if left out in the sun too long, it get funky...
