Did you guys know that IFC (independent film channel) they run Samurai Saturdays from 8 am to 10am?
If I drag my butt out of bed early I watch whatever movie they are showing. So far I've seen "Yojimbo" "Seven Samurai" and "Sword of Doom" All very good movies. I want to see Samarai it has several parts to it and is suppose to be pretty good. I only saw it at Media Play recently on DVD and didn't get a chance to purchase it yet. Has anyone seen it? I heard that it was kind of like "Gone With the Wind". I don't know. ~Koori |

My personal favorite currently is:
Ame Agaru http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=AEBD-10003 Great Akira Kurosawa manuscript done by his crew after his death. It has the depth of Akira Kurosawa's movies without his preachyness. Also, features Mugai Ryu Iai and chreography by Otake sensei of TSKSR. - - - For simple action, the best sword work I've seen in English is actually called "The Equals" or "The Challenge" or "The Sword of the Ninja (TV edition)" starring Scott Glenn and Mifune. The chreography was actually done by Steven Seagul...shows the quality of his earlier works, much like Above the Law or Hard to Kill...unlike his "later" stuff. |

yojimbo and sanjuro are pinnacle of ronin samurai movies. kurosawa is the best, no question.
samurai fiction is a cool modern samurai movie. not to be taken seriously, but its got cool shots. twilight samurai was also a great modern samurai movie. very serious, interesting perspective into samurai life. |

Musa yes very intense, have anybody saw Warriors of Heaven and Earth?
It's a nice a bizzare movie, the images and the costumes are so neat. Anyway, Musa, wich as a story very different from WoHaE, as the same pacing as the later, you have to see it to believe it. anyway, download Musa if you can, it's worth it (specialy if you like blood). |

All of the Kozure Ookami movies I've seen have been good (I especially like the fifth one.) I agree that Sanjuro is underrated. Great film, along with Yojimbo. I haven't seen Akakage yet, but I did see Samurai Fiction, which is by the same director (?) I think. That's also pretty sweet. Tasogare Seibei was great, and the new Zatoichi was mediocre. I enjoyed the first bit of Gohatto, because of the sword work, but it got dull, and soupy with the man-love that followed. Mibu Gishi Den is a pretty cool Shinsengumi movie, too.
I haven't really seen any good ninja flicks. I've got Akakage on my "to see" list. Any other recommendations? |
