I've only been tsuki-ed once; might as well have been never. But I've seen the mark of a deflected tsuki........that was...well, scary, so I remembered. It was in the upper arm and was this black and red gored web of broken blood vessels surrounding the pitch-like impact point. I don't know how the guy could even move his arm after that.....freakish. *shudder* Must. Keep. Head. Down.

Our doesnt play it either..although I must say that I am curious to see feel what it is to have taken a good tski shot though. Though we got some guys in our dojo chopping wood and hitting dingers...I would hate to take a miss shot from that.

I see you're in the States, ever play organized football? If so, ever take one of those shots to the head that linemen use to stand the other guy up? A correct tsuki reminds me of one of those, it knocks your head back a bit and doesn't exactly hurt, but it isn't pleasent either. Some of the ones described here sound more like a highlight reel of a free safety spearing a receiver in the facemask and knocking them through 180 degrees of rotation in the air to land on their head.

I think its a shame if a dojo doesnt allow tsuki. I understand if they dont let Mudansha use it, but are you saying they dont let Yudansha use it either? That would realy be a shame.

on a seminar doing jigeiko i once got tsukied under the men tare and into my throat. the opponents shinai even managed to pull me above the floor (and then i fell down on my knees coughing my tonsils out).

it drew blood and left a notorious b.i.g. mark. but what really sucked was that it hurt to gulp food for weeks. in our dojo that's what we call a 'pincho moruno' tsuki. in french it would be le -petite- brochette tsuki... or something. i'm not too keen on french anyway, but you get the idea with these pictures:

http://radiomoris.com/rm/photos/416.jpg oh man... poor fish.

i think perhaps in japanese it could be 'yakitori' tsuki? lol.

The worst tsuki I got was during a competition (the Mumeishi 3's, 2 years ago), I got a mukaezuki that came in rock hard, ripped up my neck (it drew blood!) and lifted so high of my feet that I actually bounced when I hit the floor.
Gag.... that sound really painful.

I receive tsuki many times. The horrifying ones will be the ones that misses and scratch through the side of the neck. The worse I ever get is from a sensei. I was going in for men and he was coming in with tsuki. I quickly try to harai it off while still in the midst of going for men but did it way too short and his shinai hits the side of my tsuki pad and then went into the opening and hit my throat and scratch/slash through the side of my neck pulling few hairs with it. The blood beneath my skin and the bruise stayed for the next 2 practices.

Ummm... I've heard scary things about your tsuki... all the way from Edinburgh. Well, I know to keep my head down next time I go around London.
I've had as many tsuki from Gibbo as the next man, but I can confidently say that he's never once inflicted any damage on me. Practice makes, well, if not perfect, it makes it at the very least safe.

Default Bad tsuki stories
Let's hear your bad tsuki stories. My story... let's just have this picture explain itself. Kudos on the person that guesses who the guy pointing at me is (he's the guy that gave me the tsuki).

Well...one of my Sempai during a taikai in WA got tsukied. It hit his mune, slid up perfectly onto his Adam's apple and he just dropped. We thought he was dead...the best part was when he finally opened his eyes and asked, "did I win?"...

Damn, Adam's apple, how the heck did he get to speak not so long after that? I've only seen somebody drop by taking a men hit at the side of his head (don't remember the name of the waza, but i nearly experienced the same thing, was going to totally black out and fall but somehow kept myself conscious). I got hit by some missed tuski(s) to the side of the neck as most kenshi have.

Uhmm, you don't think you kinda gave away the name in the title of the picture? (Although I already know Mr. Howell)

I wouldn't call that a bruise, though ;-)

Thats more like a dink. Post something that REAL men would call a tsuki mark. Grrrr.

when i got tsukied i was going for a men and the tip of his shinai hit my doh and slipped right into my right shoulder dislocating my arm. it hurt a lot. the crazy thing was we popped it back into place and i continued to keiko the rest of the night cause it felt better. the next morning it was so stiff and sore i could barely move it.
