I ran a system scan for viruses and found 6 viruses called "roing search enhancement". Doesn't appear to do anything right now, but its eating up memory, and its a virus, and i'd like to get rid of it ASAP. Problem is, the POS Norton Antivirus program I have doesn't know how to get rid of it...doesn't even register it (had to use a different program free-trial scan.) I've noticed there are a lot of computer people just short of being genuises on this forum, and was wondering if any of them can help me with this.
Check out http://forums.techguy.org/showthread.php?t=230345

cheers

Ok...i'll try out the programs you guys suggested. The free trial scan I used was Spyware Doctor (or maybe Adware Doctor...something Doctor). I can't seem to find the file manually...i'll try to narrow down the search a bit. Norton still isn't showing it...but I have had several bad experiences with Norton and don't like it at all. Once, several viruses were downloaded, but it didn't pick it up and the hard drive got fired. Do not want a repeat of that.

How do i go about quartining it? I just ran a full system scan, and it came up with nothing. Ran several searches over the C drive...didn't find the thing...but dang it, I ran another scan with the other program, and its still there.

Oh...bloody H***. In the time between I started this thread and now, the number of infections has gone from 6 to 65. I just finished running another norton scan and it didn't pick up any of these. Grr......

I usually run two programs, first Adaware, then try running this program called HijackThis. After you ran it, just check the list for some suspicious ones and remove it, but careful you don't wanna remove some system stuff. These two proggies helped me got rid of quite a few browser hijackers and stuff, so I hope this works for you, too.

Good luck

I use AdawareSE, Spybot, and AVG antivirus, I also use zonealarm firewall. This combination keeps my computer, and both my teenage sons, PCs working happily. I also recommend this setup to all my customers, and none of them seem to be having any problems. BEWARE . . . There are programs claiming to remove spyware, viruses, etc. which actually are installing the bloody things.

there's supposed to be an option in norton where it says quarantine, remove and something else. if the antivirus can't do it, you can delete the files manually. just look for it though.

if you're using norton antivirus you can probably quarantine the file if it can't delete or something.

don't dump it, update it. some internet providers offer antiviruses and adware something too. if you have some extra cash, spend it on these.

Ok...thanks everyone. I just have a few questions
1. How do I do a full system restore?
2. Should I dump Norton and install a different Antivirus program?

*edit* A majority of the 65 new viruses turned out to be low to high/elevated level cookies and files in the temp. folder. Now i've got about 10 or so left...

Ad Aware is a good program. But, if you're looking to remove the virus automatically, try the Housecall Online Virus scan by Trend Micro. It's helped me a few times when I was between anti-virus software. Good luck.

One thing I would recommend is NOT getting anything from microsoft.
*ew*

It sounds like what you have is a parasite or some kind of malware. Antivirus software will not take care of it.
Try these:

AdAware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/ is free software and is updated constantly. Just install and update it and one single scan should sort you out.

Doxdesk http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/ is a website that looks at your browser (works best with ie) and tells you if it can detect any parasites. If it does it gives you very specific details about how to get rid of it.

A reinstall is a bit dramatic if you haven't done it before, so just take those two pills and give me a call in the morning.

When was the last time you updated your virus signatures? Norton has been out of date for several years now. They were sold to Symantec quite some time ago, but I believe they are still updating their virus signatures. If you've not updated within a day or two, you are behind and need to do so.

Good luck!

What was the free trail software?

I think that if Norton doesn't detect it them it might not be somthing seen as a virus.

I have good experiances with Ad Aware SE
