i actually had the pleasure of meeting Taniguchi-Sensei at a function during the embu-taikai in kyoto earlier this year. he gave me his name card and on it, it said that he has been given the 3rd order of merit from the emperor. i'm not sure what that is exactly but coupled with being a 9th dan, Taniguchi-Sensei obviously deserves the title "hanshi". i think i remember someone telling me he was something to do with the imperial guard previously although i could be wrong.

Just to correct Paikea His name was "Taniguchi"

And I think the other people were all 8th Dan, because I heard the announcer say all their names and ranks at the end.

Ah, thanks for that. I recalled the name from the old KendoVJ site, thought it seemed odd at the time.
