I watched a tournament once and saw a kendoka go down...the opponent kept going after men and the one who fell scrambled like heck to get away and get up. I don't believe the fallen one dropped his shinai, but I think it's supposed to be one point to the other if the guy drops it twice in the match.

When somebody falls down during a match, what are the rules? Like, can the person still standing strike the opponent who, fell? or visa versa, can the person who fell, quickly get back up and attack/defend without the refs pausing the match. Does it depend on how you fell, where you fell, why you fell, if you drop the SHIANI or not?
Now we are having a kinda league SHIAI at school where everyone fights everyone once. Sometimes a KENDOKA falls down and the standing KENDOKA never really knows what to do. Do you stop, help him up, or go for MEN? I remember a link in a post awhile back, that had this great rule book for kendo SHIAI but can't seem to find it. |

Usually, you are told to immediately hit anything thats open on the fallen kendoka.
Coming from the other side of the fence, usually the shimpan stops the match after the kendoka falls so there is usually no chance the fallen one can attack/defend. However, that is why if you are not the one that has fallen, you go in for a quick hit.. Tim |

Here's an older thread, there are several others like it. ![]() And I don't really trust older rules (those on your page are 1998 while I'm pretty sure the current rules are dated March 23, 2000. I know it's being carebear but it could be a difference ![]() |

Actually those ones are from '88 not '98. Here's a more current version. See under "Subsidiary Rules for Kendo Competition and its Refereeing", Articles 11 and 16 (point 5), then under "Guidelines for Competitors and Referees", sub-heading "Suspension", point 3/4. The substance of the rules haven't changed - if someone falls, the shimpan will allow a point if the strike is made immediately, what constitutes "immediately" is up to the shimpan. If no valid cut is made, the match is halted and restarted at centre. No penalty to the fallen person, unless they intentionally lie on their stomach and try to cover.
