Default knee pads

Are you asking an Iai question or a Kendo question?

Do you need kneepads for kendo? Since when? Could you elaborate?

i'm sure you can get your knee injured some how doing kendo.. but i never seen anyone wearing one because they think they will get injured on their knee.

few weeks ago, i had to wear knee brace/bandage to practice since my knee was acting up from old injury with different MA.

i don't know the exact rule, but i heard some time ago that any protection is not allowed in shiai.. then few weeks ago i asked this to one of the sempai and he said 'says who?'.. so.. not sure which one is true.

He might be talking about a knee brace. Knee pads for kendo sound a little odd. Kendoka rarely sit in seiza and certainly don't move around on the floor whilst being on there knees. That's for us iaidoka. But I don't see why you can't wear knee bandages during practice, embu, taikai, etc. You wear them under your hakama. What are they going to do: lift up your hakama and check? Doubt it. I think that they rather see some one wearing a knee brace because he/she wants to participate in a kendo tournament (shows spirit and the high ranking kendoka/ iaidoka (that I’ve met) love to see spirit) than a healthy guy/girl that doesn't put any effort into it. If you really need to wear kneepads during a taikai you need to check the rules of the tournament: hitting below the do is not allowed. This includes the knees.

Actually, it's hits below the do will not count.

But isn't "unfair datotsu" also a hansoku? I'd say hitting the knees counts as unfair.

doesnt make much sense for kendo... unless you're in a tournament where everyone has terrible aim

but what about naginata and isshu-shiai? missed cuts to the sune might as well end up hitting a knee.... so maybe a better question would be, are knee pads allowed in nagi-isshu?

So you're allowed to hit below the do? Nasty.
