Pretty radical stuff. And I thought skateboarding was dangerous.

That's parkour. Me and my friends used to do that when I was living in the UK a few years ago, although not as fancy as these guys. Somehow, I've never broken a bone or (seriously) hurt myself. But then again, maybe I landed on my head and forgot.

There's a french movie about Parkour called Yamakasi don't know if there's an english subbed or dubbed version though. In this webpage they got some clips about some of the best Parkour groups in France.

I think it started in the Nice housing developments about 5 years ago.

It's really amazing, it's like movie special effects but in real life! Those guys really have guts (I get scared just paragliding ).
The guy they had in on Richard and Judy certainly said it was a French idea. Appparently they figure out every part of each jump precisesly and rehearse it with mats to the exact measurements before they attempt any of their stunts.

In the initial interview I saw, it was quite the opposite. These guys were absolutely nuts, jumping over walls without having any idea what was on the other side. They are also very strong, agile and have a lot of experience jumping and falling which makes it seem planned. They played a form of follow the leader where, one person would lead the group trying harder and harder stunts until they fell - sort of a stunt jam session. Really impressive and dangerous stuff.

I remember a few years later the initial club/posse/gang was giving a demonstration for a tv and half of the people that were scheduled to be on the program were replaced because they had recently suffered major injuries. It appears that breaking bones and ending up in hospital on a regular basis is part of the price they pay. kendo is pretty tame in comparisson.

maybe the show I watched wanted to show the guys doing it safely and wanted to show that it "takes a lot of hard work" as Judy said. prime time viewing + parkour = lots of complaining parents from injured kids

Yamakasi DVD with english subtitle, there is also a second movie, not as good as the first one but worth seing.

Mark is right about the fact that there's no "preplaning" before executing the stunts.

Might not have been with that particular group, but you gotta trust me that most of the pro groups do a lot of pre-planning before executing the stunts.
