According to my sensei, Koki Ariga, who is on the board of directors of AUSKF and VP of Competition, the proposal from Disney was to have the AUSKF championships held at Disney World in Orlando, not in Anaheim. Disney would build the necessary space for not only championships, but also for kendo demonstrations on a regular basis.
There has been no word as of yet as to progress of negotiations. |

Are they creating a "Little Japan" attraction? Are they hiring people to train in kendo all day and will pay us just to do kendo? Do we finally have the chance to be like the Japanese police and be paid to do kendo??? Now you've got me excited!!! On the other hand... I really don't know what to think! Could be good, too. Man.. Mc DOjo..
well considering how unpopular Kendo is in other parts of the world.. I reckon some publicity should be really good.. It should be more commercialized... more in commercials... more on TV... more kendo in movies... hell u can have kendo matches like ppl play Super ball... Kendo tournaments in Japan is like most watched sport aside from Baseball... Hell.. I reckon kendo needs to be promoted anyway it can.... |

when disney, one of the bigger entertainment industry, gets involve in kendo.. i can't help thinking nike, and adidas ain't too far behind.. it would be great if AUSKF has firm hand in the whole thing and keep it under control with good taste.. but i could just see disney running all over the thing and putting mickey and donald all over the place. just hope it doesn't turn into a freak show.
by the way, don't they have one of those funky martial art free form competition down at orlando every year sponsored by some hair product people? shinai free form kata anyone? pete |

Sorry Kaoru,Kendo at Disney, just mentioning this reaks of McDojo. I really hope the AUSKF is not going to promote kendo this way.If disney is actually going to do this. The only reason in doing so is for profit and thats ALL. If the AUSKF wants to hold the tournment at Disneyworld ,Yes it would gets lots of exposure. But doing the other would guarantee Mcdojo or do about the same for kendo that the last samurai or kill bill movies did.Alot of people would quit as soon as they find out the work and practice that is involved in kendo.

Doing demonstrations at Disney World would be a great way to advertise to the masses that Kendo exists. If it were just a demonstration to showcase Japanese culture or martial arts in genera, then I see no problem with it.
Though with anything you do, there will be problems. If Kendo isn't promoted to the masses, then there are no extra members and it becomes a dying art. But if you do advertise, then you get more people and the possibility of McDojos. The good news is that at least by coming here or e-budo you can find out what's a good dojo or not (though you'd have to find this place first), |

One thing we have going for us if many McDojos are created would be more tournaments that would hopefully be open to the masses and not just the McDojo community or members of random coalitions of McDojo chains. Then when the McDojo students get crushed again and again, they will start to open their eyes and say "why does everyone from _________ dojo keep crushing us?" The smart ones will research and see the light.
With the grow of McDojos, the AUSKF could issue patches (something reasonable though, nothing retarded) or some other form of visual identification for competitors from AUSKF affiliated dojos. Perhaps another method could be dojo banners with some form of copyrighted marking that is easily recognizable as who has affiliations with the Federation and who don't. (It could also be a neat way of showing where everyone in a tournament is coming from. It's another way of building the community by making us more knowledgeable of our kendo neighbors as well.) Kind of like a quality control method so we can designate who is real and who is not to the potential growing McDojo community if this reality comes to pass. This method would help the McDojo people who don't realize the connection or who don't do their research. These are just random thoughts, but should a McDojo invasion occur, there are ways we can combat it, force the McDojos to acknowledge their lack of actual teachers, and maybe they (the McDojos) would actually ship in people who actually do teach kendo to transfer out of the evil Mc organizations and become real. Of course I am just rambling on in my half sleep, I will shut up now... |
