It depends ... like Paikea said: If I'm in my 2nd training unit of the week, I usually don't put on my bogu, because of kata practice. If you want, you can also say, that warm up may occur easier. On the other hand, you don't lose the extra time you spend on puttin on the bogu. It depends from dojo to dojo and concerning the issue of the training.

It's just a dojo culture thing. Some places I visit, people put the tare/doh on in the dressing room. We don't even put men on in the lineup. We warm up together, line up and then break off into beginners and advanced and advanced put on their entire bogu. This way the beginners don't waste time sitting around while the advanced people put on their stuff.

I think it is mostly a time management issue.
Although there are different thought processes on it too. Practices are really short where I train now so people get all their gear but men on and will practice kata shortly before normal keiko. In other dojos I have visited, wearing your doh while practicing kata is a no no and it doesn't matter if it wastes time to take off or put on gear because according to them you shouldn't do that. |

Our seniors used to put on everything but kote and men which they'd put on after we'd done warm-ups, lined up and broken off into seniors and beginners. Until that is sensei started making us do shuttle runs followed by push ups. Now the seniors don't have to put on their bogu until after warm-ups.
So yeah, really does depend on the timetabling of each dojo. On a side note: Shuttle runs are evil. I'm thinking of taking a petition to the UN as an act of preventable human cruelty the infamous shuttle run should be outlawed. Anyone caught forcing others to do shuttle runs should be forced to do ten hours of straight shuttle run. |
