Default Kendo Withdrawls
Have any of you experienced Kendo withdrawl symptoms after an extended period of time away from practice? For those of you that may not know, withdrawls are usually associated with people that are trying to quit smoking or drinking and their body desires something that it hasn't been getting for a while. Such symptoms would include irritability or shaking. Just think of the sake scene with Algren in "The Last Samurai."

Back to the thread. The reason why I ask is becasue I am having them now. After being away from practice for the past few weeks due to Christmas vacation, I long for the moment I get back and start swinging the shinai again. It's to the point where I keep thinking about Kendo every minute of the day and my body just seems to want to kiai or do waza. I also have a big resolve for when I start to try even harder than I have been before.

Yes! I missed a little over a week of kendo for the holidays and I had the same problem. I did a bunch of suburi in the garage every day. I haven't been like shaking or any of that but it was a big relief to get back to the dojo on monday.

I wouldn't compare it to withdrawal symptoms of smoking or caffiene, but it is sort of like a mini depression. It's something to look forward to when you get to go to practice and not having that is disappointing. It is also the problem of too much free time that I don't know what to do with it. Being able to practice 4 times a week and then having that taken away leads to a lot of down time.

Hey, how's it going? I remember fighting alongside you last year. I do hope that we can see each other for the next Cleveland Tournament.

One thing that I have also been doing was look at Musashi no Ken stuff. All I have is issue #7 for the manga that I happened to find somewhere, but I can't find the other mangas and the DVDs don't come cheap. I wish there was a way to preview this stuff or find cheaper alternatives.

Anime Im glad that you remember me. I hope to get back to cleveland tournment again this year . Im doing pretty good. I will test for San-dan next month and also go to France for a tournment in Feb. also.
Im not really sure about the magna. There are alot of magna shops in Ikebukuro near where I live. If you give me the names I will check for you,but it will be Japanese only.

Good luck with your test!

The one I am looking for is Musashi no Ken. As far as it being in Japanese, that's fine with me since the lone issue that I have is in Japanese and I can at least partially read it.

Like Nodachi said, it doesn't feel like a nicotine withdrawl but I will be more than happy to return to the dojo. just a few more days...

Maybe the comparison to drugs was a little extreme, but I am pretty sure the point was made, lol.

It's been about three weeks, but seems like it's been 3 months since my last training session. In the meantime I find myself sanding and oiling my shinais, treating with care and devotion. Ensuring they are in great condition. What is really crazy is I find I can't keep my hands off my shinai, and get scolded by my girlfriend when I touch it.
I think she is jealous....

Kendo withdrawal? I almost bought the PUMA Kendo shoes on ebay for $69 (there's still another hour to go) but had to be convinced by my mother to not do it.

Body create endorphin during effort wich is sort of natural morphin and the stress of gi-geiko generate adrenalin. These are two natural "drugs" and an interesting cocktail.

Most definately. All three of my classes, kendo, iaido, and judo, have been postponed for the last couple of weeks due to the holidays and various interuptions, and I'm about to climb out of my skin. Thankfully, they start back tomorrow.

No, not really. When I am not able to go to the dojo and practice I generally use that time to strengthen my ki and spiritual side of kendo. The mind is also a great deal of kendo and it can be worked on whether you are in the dojo or not. Please note, I'm not saying that I don't miss actual practice .. its just I don't have ' withdrawal '.

While i still do suburi and other basic drills, i'm still having withdrawal symptoms for the lack of jigeiko and other drills that one cannot do alone for 2 years and still going, of all the martial arts that i could've practiced when i lived in Montreal i chose the one that doesn't exist in my country, the thing is i don't regret it one bit, i got kendo under my skin and it's not going anywhere.

Were you living on some kendo forsaken land during that time or was it something else?
