Naw.. A&M and the Longhorns have a huge rivalry. But whatever it is, Texans take their football seriously. hehe Texas - Texas A&M was a huge rivalry in the 20th century (64-34-5) and late in the 19th century (3-0). In the 21st century: 2005: UT 40 - A&M 29 2004: UT 26 - A&M 13 2003: UT 46 - A&M 15 2002: UT 50 - A&M 20 2001: UT 21 - A&M 7 2000: UT 43 - A&M 17 OU is the Longhorn's huge rival of the 21st century. A&M has been on the decline after sacking RC Slocum (.721 lifetime coaching record) in 2002 after a 6-6 season and then poaching Dennis Franchione away from an Alabama program under probation. Yes, A&M is not Penn State. Its highly ironic to see Alabama playing Texas Tech in the Cotton Bowl while A&M fans are home rooting for USC. Preseason A&M was picked to finish 2nd or 3rd in the Big 12 South behind UT and could easily have gone to the Cotton Bowl. Now that would have been a fun game to see. Drizzt, I'm surprised you're rooting against UT. If USC wins, that only reinforces the impression that the Big 12 is a weak conference. That hurts recruiting for all Big 12 schools and especially for A&M given its esteemed status as the junior school in the Republic of Texas. lol ![]() ![]() Serious about football? Naw... Hookem! Seeing that there are no other Longhorn fans posting, let's clarify the historical record. OU may be there big rival on the football scene(although if franchione can get his act together....and we can get rid of the pretty boy, rgotistical assholes like Mcneal), but theres SOOOO much more to t.u-A&M than football. There are traditions on both sides of this little fight that would continue wether football was played or not. I mean think about it.......we built a 65(it was 109 in '69)foot tall stack of logs to burn every single year regardless of how good or bad the team is.......then when we have a major accident, Everyone spends a year grieving, and gets mad when we cant do it anymore. now its moved off campus, and grown back to nearly fifty feet. At least on the ag side of things........football is fun but tradition are what we live and breathe. I just can bring myself to root for the orange and white.......it irks me. BTW A&M has been spreading its proud traditions since 1876.....t.u. was founded in 1883. Baylor is the only major university in Texas i can think of thats older than A&M(i could be wrong). A&M was however a all military school until the fifties, and did not have a female student body(and make service in the corps of cadets optional) until the 60's. Calling it the Junior university would be incorrect..... |

Well m&a has certainly been spreading *something* around since 1876...
Kenwakokoro correctly posits the argument that it's good to support teams within our conference (he and I are both UT graduates and I was 5-year member of the Longhorn Band), but Drizzt, I can understand your feeling; it also doesn't feel right to me to pull for m&a either. I think there are enough of y'all out there practicing your yells to take care of that. If you ags can be patient with Franchione though, better days will come. He's won everywhere he's been and he's definitely got the tools there. When you get a little older your perspective on the rivalry will relax a little (despite what they tell you in fish camp) and you can enjoy it for what it is. A strong rivalry is a fun thing, and may you enjoy many 10-1 seasons. As for *this*season, we'll soon see. Hook'em or die... |

LOL.... All i have to say. "when you get a little older", hate to tell you this man, mom, and both my older cousins(youngest of wich is thirty), feel the same way i do(classes of '79 '94 and'98 respectivley). It's sad to know that so many t.u fans...and so many ags....let the old rivalry die for various reasons. I also like the tradition hijack....real original. Anyway....enough of that fight, the age card isnt going to com close to working this time, i can muster more old ags than you can shake two sticks at who feal the same way if not more vehemently.
As far as fran goes......he took a step in the right direction this year by firing torbush(though im afraid i dont know much about his new hire), but hes got to clean his act up. That and weve gotten rid of the peacock that was mcneal. We'll see how he implements the changes, but at some point enough is going to be enough.....and that time is coming very soon. It would be different if he as struggling to build a program that was already in a shambles, but he came into an old program that was having winning seasons when slocum left. We had been Big XII champs as recently as 98(and did well in 99) , and now were barely pulling it out against baylor. Somethings wrong when a coach takes over a decent program and it falls apart. |

I see there’s still been some activity on this thread…
First, to all USC grads who may be around on these boards, congratulations on the season and a great game. It’s a real accomplishment to maintain a top ranking all through the season and the Trojans lived up to all of their billing and are a justifiably proud program. Next, Drizzt--it was me who was LOL after your post. The “tradition highjack” you allege is a way that some orangebloods have been writing for years before my time. I suppose this was the first time you saw it. I went to my last game as a bandmember in College Station before you were born, and have been to many more since then. I’ve got a lot of stories based in the rivalry--more than I have room to write about here--so if you think I lack context, I can assure you you’re mistaken. I’ve seen plenty of the “vehement” types of aggies you refer to, but since graduating I’ve also worked with many more and have an old ag as a neighbor, to name a few. I don’t think anyone would want to do away with the rivalry--it’s too much fun--but, college football is a game, and I would suggest that it shouldn’t be the basis for deriving fulfillment in life. When you leave Texas and get out into the world, you’ll find lots of people who neither know nor care at all about it and you'll begin to see the larger picture. As I said before, enjoy it for what it is, but taking a narrow view will only be self-defeating. Want an example? Look no further than your kendo club. Dr. Garney began his kendo practice in Austin and drove here every weekend as he was learning. Later, when he began the group there many UTKA members visited to help and participate in practices--and we also loaned some bogu sets (many of which are probably still there) to help get things started. If we had taken a narrow attitude and refused to help, it’s hard to say whether the group would have gotten off the ground or not, but the larger cause was kendo and now you’re able to practice. So by all means be true to your school, as I am. But the bigger victory lies in the ability to have a beer with your rival when the game is done. We all become older; becoming wiser though, takes more effort. Here endeth the lesson. Enjoy your college years… |
