Default Shinkendo in Local News
LOS ANGELES -- It is the last Samurai "Dojo" in Little Tokyo where they teach not just kendo -- wooden sword play -- but actual cold steel combat. Kelly Mack found out that the ancient art of Samurai holds valuable lessons for 21st Century men and women.

If you can tune out the reporter, the video is pretty good.

It was pretty good, actully. Not bad for a two-to-four minute human interest piece. I wish that the local news would do stories like that in my neck of the woods. The reporter being allowed to use a sword bugs me for some reason, though.

That looks like a very rough and less intence version of Shintomunen ryu in Nakamura Hakudos dojo.
I've been trying to teach my self the 8 diamond forms on the sword that have been removed from kendo as seen the the suburi in that video. I tell you it is very hard!
Does any one actualy practice these things in iaido or any thing?

It bothers me that the news channel called it "samurai class". like you can go take a class and get a certificate saying you are samurai.

The video also says it is traditional swordsmanship... not really. It did look a lot like the training they did in Last Samurai which really did happen and is as accurate as possible to that time period... okay maybe not.

For a news story to be able to do a story on anything martial arts related and try to be accurate and not sound corny or too spiritual and samurai worshipping like is a really difficult task. I think that compared to other articles I have seen in newspapers and things, this clip was actually pretty good. Yes there are annoying moments to it (bo-ku-to) but it is a lot better than some crap articles I have seen in the past.

AFAIK Shinkendo is a relatively new but completely legitimate Budo.

Totally agree. And as Lloromannic says, I also belive Shinkendo is a legitimate Budo. This news article, thou exagerating some parts ("samurai class" XD ), is quite good. Shows the basic stuff, somewhat accurate, and could create some sincere interest in the viewers.

I really like this one a lot better than the "Extreme martial arts" series of Discovery Channel, which one would expect to be a more serious and trustable source of information, but which in the end SUCKS big time! ¬¬

I where you guys are going, but all new martial arts to me are equivalent to "rex kwon do" and other martial arts learned from fighting in the "octagon".

I dont know why I started kendo but I can surely say it had nothing to do with training to be samurai (that came with iaido )
