I think he meant schools in Korea, and not Kumdo dojangs. It may be true for all we know.

Kaoru
it's true

it's not exactly a brainwashing, but as far as I can remember my elementary history classes, Japanese were described as:

1/ barbaric in early years, and couldn't read or write, and only able to do so once they established trade relationship with one of the kingdoms in korean peninsula.. (paek-jae i believe)

2/ petty pirates who'd raid coastal towns of southern Korea from time to time, kidnapping Korean Artisans and women.

3/ invaders on many occasions, and despicable bunch who burnt down many of Korea's treasured monuments/buildings/etc.

4/ vile bunch who's responsible for mass genocide during occupation in Korea, prostituting korean women, testing chemical agents on koreans, trying to destroy korean culture/language, practically dismantling the royal family

5/ and I'm sure the recent textbooks cover more recent issues such as dispute over the small islet, and fishing rights, etc.

generally, Japan isnt described in a favourable manner... quite biased IMO.

IMO there's not much hostility towards individual persons of Japanese nationality... much of it is directed towards their government.

I hope you are right. Everyone is welcome in our Dojang and the name of the school is Sung Moo Kwan Kendo Academy. I can't speak for the Korean educational system but I have never seen an overt hint of unpleasantness toward the Japanese, even when attending our Kumdo competitions. I do detect a touch of ethnocentricism towards things Korean, but that is to be expected and overlooked. And, I have learned alot about the culture as a result of their pride in themselves and I have found my dojomates to be very accepting of me and respectful that they do not offend me with their ways.

No but seriously, the people at my dojang are some of the most respectful people in the world, and they never say anything bad about Japan.

i think it's similar to the relationship between Canada and US... Most of the Canadians (80%+ on some poll) despise GW Bush and the White House... but we like the Americans as individual, sharing much the same values, etc.

IMO Japan and Korea can only get closer, with rise of China... really, histories aside, they are two countries they need to strengthen their ties to make sure they are not run over by China economically, militarily, culturally, etc.

What's wrong? JoonShik-an did not say Kumdo dojangs. He said "schools" and I believe he meant as in regular schools, not a dojang, IMHO. OW-san thought he meant Kumdo dojangs, I think. It could be read both ways I suppose, but take a look at what the original person, JoonShik-san wrote. I am fairly certain he meant regular schools, not Kumdo dojang.

But, JoonShik-san has not come back yet to clarify for us, so we don't really know what is correct.

I thought it was clear enough sayin "schools", so I'll clarify, I meant regular schools.

That's what I thought. Thank you for clarifying that.

Historically, Koreans have been more linked to China than they have to Japan, seeing China more as a big brother and Japan as a rival.
Secondly, at this point, Koreans can't put history aside with Japan. I could see Korea allying itself with China while Japan allies itself more with the US... so they don't necessarily need to get closer.

that's possible.. but then again, US is also trying very hard to be on friendly term with china. as matter of fact, US basically told taiwan to shut up about the whole china/taiwan issue. when up until 70's US wouldn't even recognize red china.

china is becoming very strong very fast both its military, and economy. everyone needs to keep an eye on that red giant..

as far as koreans being closer with china.. that depends on who's in power in korea. most koreans hate commies.. but love money. suck up to china for their money? or hate them for being damned commies. i know US is sucking up big time.
