I have three tattoos so far, two designed by myself one tribal design on my upper left arm, chinese writing with a tribal design around it on my lower back, and one chinese symbol on the inside of my right wrist. |

Why is it that someone always has to say that tattoos are self 'mutilation' though? |

If I wanted comments from the peanut gallery, i would have asked. If you don't like tat's, don't post. I really dont want to hear your drivel about "mutilations", or "disfigurement". Don't like 'em, don't get any. Want to think I'm just showing off, that's your opinion. However, as i couldn't give a shit what you think, how about you slag off.

Nope, you aren't the only tattooed 'freak' on these boards.
My right shoulder has an original biomech design. Left bicep has kanji for 'tiger' (yes I researched it for 2 months before I had it done!) and a dragon below it. Left shoulderblade has a samurai, and below it right across my back has two samurai warrior on horseback fighting (half shaded at the moment, going back on Friday for completion). Why is it that someone always has to say that tattoos are self 'mutilation' though? It's their own body, no-one elses. People pay thousands for original artwork, so why not have something extra-original that is always with you and means something to YOU. |

Nope, you're not alone. I have sleeves on both arms to the wrist, ending on the chest, my back covered from neck to ass, and a couple on my inside right calf that were the first tattoos I ever did myself. Not to everyones taste I admit, but I love 'em. |

Very true. And it is always hard to try and asses your maturity level (everyone thinks they are mature enough to do as they want, ask any 12yr old, lol). As i said, if you're not sure, DON"T do it. Going back after you've been inked costs more, hurts more, and still leaves a scar.
I find my tattoos to be an introspection. They give me a reference to where i was in my life at the time. I try and base my tattoos on concepts that have remained constant ( at least to me), or on art that reflects who I am. It may happen that 20 years down the road I decide that I screwed up, and now am stuck with 10lbs of ink in my skin. Then again, I may look back and still be as happy with them as I am now. I know not what the future may bring, only what the past has left behinde. And I can always have fun scaring the "normals", lmao I like the soccer mom part, cause it's too true. Most of the soccer moms get tattooed because it's the thing to do (trends show that 60-70% of all tattoos being recently inked are on women between 25-45, usualy business types). If you're getting inked cause it's "trendy", DON'T. You will regret it later, just like the drunk who got tattooed, it seemed appropriate at the time. 12 hours later might be a different story. |

I'm not at all worried about what it will be like in 20years. I waited till i was 20 till i got my first, so I really put alot of thought into it (7 years worth). The truth is that i didn't get tattooed because it was trendy. Most of the people I know tryed to dissuade me. My tattoos are a reflection of who I am, and where I have been. Each and every one has meaning, and memories attached to it. As my last tattoo artist said " Pain is the process, everything else is just a reminder." I do understand peoples views on this, and I do NOT advocate to anyone to get tattooed unless they are 100% sure. I've acctually turned away potential customers (I've done some tats for friends) because they were making a spur of the moment decision, and I didn't think they quite knew what they were getting into. It's there for life, so you beter be sure, lol. That and alot of people don't know how much it hurts. I was visiting a friend at a shop one day. Guy comes in, talking loudly to his friends about how "tough" he is, lmao. So Tommy (tattoo artist) get the drawing ready, puts on the stencil, and goes to town. Half inch line later the guy is out of the chair, screaming "F__k this sh_t, I ain't sitting through that!" Granted, stomach pieces hurt like hell, but make sure you know what you're getting into.
