Default Japanese Music
I'm going to be DJing at a japanese woman's wedding, and I was wondering if anyone knew of any japanese music that would be cool to play...

the theme tune to pokemon is probably as far as my knowledge of japanese music goes.......

I'm partial to The Boredoms and Acid Mothers Temple, myself. Whatever you do, don't play either of those bands at a wedding.

At the moment, Utada Hikaru is loved by many. No my speed, but my girlfriend digs it. There are some famous Okinawan songs that would go down very well at a wedding. To bad the names escape me at the moment.

Pizzicato Five, Acid Mothers Temple and Shonen Knife are all great.

Seriously now, maybe Shima Uta? It was the world cup song.

JPOP IMHO isn't all that great to listen to.
But here are a few that you can't go wrong with:

Judy and Mary
SMAP
Globe
Judy and Mary - Lover Soul

Begin - Nada Sou Sou, Shimanchu nu takara

X Japan - Tears

Pizzicato Five - Baby Love child

Utada Hikaru's First Love will work well in this situation.

Most of her songs are slow jams. X-Japan might be pretty good for fast paced Jp. metal..

Gah. I don't think any of the Japanese bands I know would be good for this situation. Not unless the Japanese find Dir en Grey and D'espairsRay to be good wedding music. And if they do, I'm so getting married in Japan.

I would suggest consulting the bride and groom.

The Pillows; the only japanese band I listen to on a regular basis. They made the soundtrack for FLCL if anyone knows that anime.

I bet they will ask for the following:
Beatles
Elvis
The Carpenters.

They played a song by the Carpenters every bl£$%^& morning as a wake up call and "Top of the ^&&*£$%^ world" every night as a knockout pill at the youth centre we stayed at. For a full fortnight.
I destroyed my wifes' CD of their 'greatest hits' in a ritual burning when I came home. I now twitch uncontrollably and maim people whenever 'that tune' is played.

As a personal favour to me, please play Metallica, Motorhead and other bands beginning with the letter 'M'. Preferably until they all leap out the upper storey window. HAHAHAHAHAAAA... revenge at last!

But The Carpenters's "Superstar" is a great song, at least when Sonic Youth plays it.

If you are doing bands with M then you should include:

Mission of Burma: "That's When I Reach for my Revolver"
Mogwai: "Mogwai Fear Satan"
Morrissey: You must absolutely play "You're The One for me Fatty"
Muse: their cover of "Can't Take my Eyes Off of You"
My Bloody Valentine: "Soon"
