Default Other arts?
Hi all,

Just wondered if you practice any other arts than the ones on the forum like TKD, Kickboxing, Aikido etc?

Which is a good art for self defence and overall feel good factor?

Aikido, well not at the moment, I can't pay the dues (I'm a college student, I'm supose to be broke). I will start again as soon as I get another job. I'm still thinking about kyudo (but they teach at the same time as iaido, damn) and muay thai. But I'm broke and 2 arts is more than enough for now.

As for self-defence, start some serious kickboxing and judo (very nice combo). I love aikido, but I will get my ass kicked when I enter a fight. Aikido takes ages before you can use it in a fight (and us aikidoka can't even punch a dent in a pack of butter).

And the feel good factor, you can do anything as long as you get a good work out.

so far.. tkd, hkd, aikido, taichi, some okinawan karate.. and some other stuff i can't even remember.

for the best bang for the buck, go with hkd. that will teach you to kick arse in short order, along with how to dislocate other people's joint, and other nice goodies.

if you can find good mui tai teacher, that would be the best for self defense in shortest amount of time.

kendo is just my cup of tea.. i really liked aikido, but it just didn't have that certain something.. like hitting someone on the head with shinai.

Naah, three sword arts and defending myself against the wife's tv-remote-shuriken-throwing is plenty...

Muay Thai. It teaches you to take punishment as well as give it. That or boxing...both work better in a real fight situation.

I heard Thai boxing was very brutal.

End up getting a broken nose or worse lol.

I think TKD looks good.

TKD is good to maybe get physical training done but as far as fighting goes for self defence its a bit unrealistic. Kick Boxing(watered down Muay Thai) would be better and probably less physically demanding.

TKD uses kicks unrealistically, eg. in close range they still try to kick each other, whereas in Kickboxing you would bring your fists and elbows in with devastating results.

Its been documented time and again where Kung Fu or TKD or Karate exponents go to Thailand to fight Muay Thai fighters and the results are always the same. The Thai kickboxers always win within the first few minutes.

It come down to the fact that the kickboxers get hit a lot. They know how to take the hit and absorb the punishment. Unfortunately, most MA don't get this.

A few of my mates used to do Muay Thai in the heavyweight and middleweight comps in Australia and for a little test, their sifu would put them in full contact karate comps and they would destroy their opponents.

Isn't it just a gendai defence art? What's special about it?

I do not know about the “defense” piece. I met once somebody who had switched from Aikido to Shintaido because (his words) “Aikido is too brutal.” Picture that.

For more information, check www.shintaido.org It is…etooo…well… check by yourself.

I have a little bit of aikido under my belt, and a few years of judo. I still practice judo.
