Why did you start kendo?
There was nothing on TV.

I was 12 years old and watching tv one Saturday afternoon in America.
There was a program about Japan: judo, karate, flower arrangement, tea ceremony, and kendo. When I saw those guys, wearing those helmets, I thought" This is cool !!! " Kendo was unusual because dojo did not advertise (and still usually don't in Japan)... So I took judo in jr. high school ( 3 Japanese Judo sensei started a dojo in Westfield, New Jersey (now Cranford).

It wasn't until I was 21, that I started kendo. Then, I got this stupid idea and crazy dream that if I could just go to Japan, for 1 week and practice kendo, I'd be the happiest guy in the world! I 've been here 15 years now, and right now, I am leaving the house to practice at the Kanagawa Ken Police Headquarters Dojo (the lion's den)! But will somebody please tell me, where are the chicks?!!!! (smile)

It had always been of interest to me
To train in a weapons art
Eventually to compete, as i really missed competing [i used to do shorin-ryu]
To get back in shape

aaaaaaaannd...

"To mold the mind and body,
To cultivate a vigorous spirit,
And through correct and rigid training,
To strive for improvement in the art of Kendo.
To hold in esteem human courtesy and honor,
To associate with others with sincerity,
And to forever pursue the cultivation of oneself.
Thus will one be able
To love one's country and society,
To contribute to development of culture,
And to promote peace and prosperity among all peoples"

I'm not sure why I started, probably because it seemed cool. When I was a younger kid there used to be an amazingly large amount of anime on mexican public TV and Kuno from Ranma was cool (despite being a jerk) and all the girls fawned over him. So I guess it all comes back to the chicks.

Do you know Takei sensei? He came to Mexico to give a seminar, very nice man.

So that I could be president of the worldwide federation of countries for the advancement of world peace through vigorous training in kendo (and Iaido if you actually sweat) or whatever the damn thing is called.

And the chicks.

I've seen my dad practice several times and thought it was pretty cool. Besides, there are so many practitioners of 'taekwondo' , 'karate', and various martial arts and I wanted something unique.

Besides, how often does a girl get an opportunity to swing a big stick around boys and smack them on their head? (although I still have few more weeks before I get to use shinai).

I actually dont know why I started. I didnt TaeKwonDo here in America, thought it was crap. Quit in the 6th grade, told myself I would start Kendo right after, took me 3yrs to start. Summer before 9th grade, somethin just triggered in my head goin, "KENDO!". I think it's because my father did it back in his high school days in Korea and a little bit here when he moved from Korea. Well, all I can say is that I'm tryin harder every practice (hopefully) and competing until I get that 1st trophy.

Because I saw it in Rurouni Kenshin

But seriously, when I was like 3 years old I used to get a bunch of plastic swords and put them on my pants and walk around (we have pictures). I was born for this! I was looking up Japanese Swords on the internet and I came across the famous JSA FAQ written by Gendzwill Sensei and I got really interested so I looked for a dojo and I found this site.

My boyfriend at the time started and I thought it looked awesome, so I joined. He later dropped out because he was too slack to keep going to training, but I have loved kendo from the start!! Ive since got rid of the boyfriend. The people in kendo are one of the things I love about it the most.

At the moment I am stuck on a station in the middle of New South Wales working on a drilling rig, and will miss over 4 weeks of training!! Auuughh!!! I dont know how I will survive!

Because what else is there in the world? Soccer? Tennis? Golf? Karate? Not very appealing to us Otaku/Rare Martial Artists.
The movies of Kurosawa made me enter a dojo, I thought that after half a year or something I would be wielding a sword with a license to do as I please.
So far that hasn't happened, but surely if I keep on practicing it will some day.
Apparently all the chicks are either in the American continent or Hawaii. So that's no incentive to start Kendo in these parts.

Honestly I haven't met everyone. I may have met him. There are about 100 members in this class (95+- % police) + police who come in when the spirit moves them + the full time( kendo only) pros (top-guns) who occasionnaly throw down... There are many other Kanagawa Ken Police Dojo in the prefecture...I did meet a Tateki Sensei 3yrs. ago there... Incidently one (46 yrs. old!!!!) sensei from our dojo received hachi dan in Kyoto a few days ago... He's police and notoriously young to be a 8th Dan... Everyone applauded Matsubara Sensei today...

Let's see. I started kendo because I wanted to become as good as my uncles in Kendo. It also looked like a great time, wearing armour and swinging a sword around. ^_^ No better skill to know.

You keep scaring the chicks away by changing outside the locker room?

I started to get in shape again. No I can't practise because that damn planner at the office just doesn't seem to understand what it means tuesday and thursday are kendonights and he just give me shifts.
