Default gendai budo: spear?
i've heard of so-jutsu, and read the article regarding bogu being used. my question is if spear arts exist in the way modern naginata and kendo exist? never heard of a federation, but the bogu article sparked my interest.

Yes, but in a disguised manner. Jukendo, the bayonet on a rifle, is based on short spear techniques. There is both paired kata and bogu practices.

Some clarification is needed here. Was the OP talking about having seen evidence of sojutsu being practiced with bogu? If so, I`d say it`s some variation of the koryu bujutsu described here:

"Sojutsu still exists in such styles as Hozoin-ryu, Saburi-ryu, Kashimashin-ryu and Katorishindo-ryu. The type of spear depends on the school - that of the Kashimashin-ryu is an imitation spear made of white oak about 225 cm long, with a cloth tip."

(quoted from "Nipponia." See this link for source: http://web-japan.org/nipponia/nipponia10/sp04.html)

I`ve never heard of it being practiced with bogu, but if it is, it would at least look different from jukendo, as it uses a somewhat longer implement (which is, moreover, not shaped like a rifle).

I've seen it practiced with a huge spear and bogu. I have absolutely no idea what it was however - it was quite a while ago. I've been led to believe that their have been displays of sojutsu at the Paris Taikai by people wearing bogu, although I've not seen it with my own eyes.

hmmm me thinks the juken weapon looks a little more transportation friendly than the long poles on the nipponia website. may even be able to practice in ones apartment.

Sojutsu is practiced as a koryu bujutsu by the Shunpukan Dojo in Nagoya. The name of the ryuha is Owarikan-Ryu. Practitioners wear modified kendo bogu and spar with kuda-yari. Points are scored but no tally is kept; they usually just perform as enbu. They appear in the Zen Nihon Kobudo Enbu Taikai every year. There are no branch dojos of this school to my knowledge, they keep to themselves largely and there seems to be very little on the internet in the way of photography etc. in either Japanese or English.

I have seen the Yari in action in the UK. It was at an alternative weapons practise with Yari against Shinai and Naginata, it was very interesting as the distances are huge and harder than you would think to get passed the point.
Bit impractical in london though lugging a 4m long spear around on the underground system.
There was also some sickle with a tennis ball on a rope action which was truly bizarre.

Kusarigama-jutsu. Never heard of it being done with a tennis ball, though.

I think it was done with rope and tennis ball instead of a chain and weight for safty reasons when against shinai or naginata.
