I think if a sempai would trow his hakama to me telling me to fold it because he deserves this respect that I all of a sudden would loose all ability to fold a hakama and create all kinda false pleats in it making him think twice next time.

I have alot of respect to my sempai but I don't think you show it by folding their hakama.

Listen to Benegizer, he's the man.

The fact is that many people on this forum probably dont understand the system, or have a very skewed or academic-only understanding of it. I think you have to live here (Japan) and see it.

Being non-Japanese, you can choose to step out of it or, if you participate, its kind of like being a 'special guest' or something. I guess if you stay here long enough then maybe you get to become a full-time participant at some time (Hyaku?).

Kendo is different from a work environment as you get to hit your sempai, so thats good.

There is only one Gibbo.

Well Neil I don't and if I would deceide to practise there I would have to learn the rules that come with practising there once I would make that step.

I have never heard this from anyone in Holland who has practised in Japan thou.

through out my school years, even in US, i lived with sempai/kohai (seon-bae/who-bae)system. in my opinion, it builds harmony and bond between group of people. the whole idea is not to abuse juniors, but to lead them in right direction.

The senpai/kohai relationship is something that is ingrained in Japanese society so the rules are "unwritten". In the Western world, this doesn't really exist unless you go into the military and you have superior officers who can tell those of lower rank to do whatever they command.

Peewee's Playhouse!!
Considering what Peewee got caught for in the "playhouse" that would be really creepy.
