Default Calendar
Some of you may already have seen in another thread that we have been discussing the idea of creating a calendar.

This originally started out as a jokey idea loosely entitled 'kendo babes calendar' but has now moved on apace to peple coming up with some good thoughts (and of course some lewd thoughts).

But I thought that the basic premise is worth considering. From where I see it we need the following

- volunteers, male and female who would like to send in pics of themselves doing their respective arts
- thes pics would need to be on a digital camera so they could be sent downline
-we should encourage people from various arts including Kendo, Iaido, Jodo and Naginatado
- the pics could be seasonal ( in other words outdoor shoots in the snow could be used for December say)
-the pics do not need to be just action shots - they could be artistic, humorous, naughty etc
- if naughty they must NOT be pornographic
- we would need someone to receive all the pice and be able to create a quality Calendar.

Then we got into discussion about how we publish this - do we get a professional or just download it via these forums. Open to suggestions on this but my view is to make it downloadable then we can all print them off and sell them to people in our own dojos.

Then came a discussion on what to do with this money. i suggested giving to charity but others have said lets use it in our own dojos - again please let me have your thoughts.

I think what we need is enough volunteers, at least 6 boys and 6 girls, to say they are prepared to do contribute pics of themselves. So far we have 2 definite girls - Newbie and SD, Solinde has not said no so I am taking that as a yes and poor Fuzzie has been volunteered by someone out her own dojo. For the boyos we have Nakura - only because he is young, pretty and could represent England, France and USA all at the same time (oh and because I volunteered him - so there)

I think, that if people think this is a workable idea, it would be good practice if the moderators could get involved - it wold sort of endorse it as a proper Kendo World Forum Calendar (and we would get to use their logo stuff).

It is my genuine hope that people from round the world get involved in this - a sort of hands across the water kind of thing. I do like the idea of kindred spirits doing things together despite the distances that separate us.

please let me have your thoughts etc

Actually...I am waiting to see the pictures that we took in early January (lots of snow) before I say something.

Oh, and that was iai. Or well...something like iai.

I'm happy to do the DTP for it. I may be able to get a limited run of printing done for nothing too.

Not sure about modelling though - the photographer will need to take a few steps back...

I agree with sending the profits to a charity. Most dojo are self running in terms of the dues they collect and all that. Unless the profits are actually something substantial that could buy multiple new sets of club bogu or something big like that then the dojos are probably not going to miss a small sum of cash that could be better used helping others. Proceeds going to charity is also a great selling point, helps to promote the calendar which promotes kendo, and it makes us just that much more different from the McDojo/for profit community. I think it would be a big statement about the kendo community.

I think it's a great idea!

Just a reminder though: if you're going to send digital pics, they must be 300dpi, not 72 dpi. If you dont have Photoshop or dont know how to adjust this, then probably a JPEG or TIFF of about 1MB size would be enough for print resolution.

A lot of good ideas start off as a joke.

And yes, for print it must be 300dpi.

My idea would be to do a different country every month. Kendoka/iaidokas of the world. That way you can montage when you have more than one person for each month.

I'm more than happy to do the photo manipulation and make the montages look not crap (such as my Southern Justice pic for those who have seen it). My kendo may be questionable at best but when it comes to photographic retouching, well, I pride myself on it.

It would mean starting it soon though. These things take a lot of time. My monitor is totally screwed at the moment but it shouldn't be too long before I get another one and can (thank god!) work on pics again.

I also like the idea of putting major events in the dates of the calendar

As for printing.. well.. we could possible always beg KW?

And with the proceeds, whilst I'd love to be able to throw some money at my dojo, a charity is a good idea. Is there an international governing body for disabled athletes?

Two excellent ideas.

I can see the August picture now - Satsuma and Rottenpunk hiding each others' parts with bogu...

Are you thinking both of them hiding in the same bogu, or in separate ones? Because the first alternative would be so much funnier.

Hehe...somehow I thought I'd regret sticking my big nose into this business ...anyways I just gotta find someone to take the pics (not many good ones around) but I think I know just the person I'd also like to nominate Andy Watson aka Captain Scarlet! If not for his ugly mug, at least to see his perfect iai/jo (I mean, he's already been on the front page of an Italian iai/jo magazine!).

There are a few other little problems, whilst I can do the artwork, that's all I can do. We need someone who can do page layout and actually make it into a calendar, also we'll need someone who can go through an international calendar and get all the relevant dates off it, like various national/state/religious holidays and can also accept important budo dates to slot in.

I have no idea how long this will take, so I don't know when I'll have to have the pics done by but I reckon if I have received all the pics by end of May I should be fine. Make sure they're all finished and ready to go by end of July to send to whoever's doing the actual putting together of all the elements?

Oh, and Sats, Alison is a kendoka from Melbourne who's on this forum somewhere. I'll tell her to read this thread

Hey, this sounds like a good idea, I don't know if i'm barging in on something private or not though.... www.cafepress.com will create things like t-shirts and hats with your own pictures and print them, I'm not sure about calenders though.

And here comes the really tricky part...what is an important date? What is huge in Europe is probably not so important for someone living in Australia due to the length of travel...and so on. And even worse: what day will the weeks start with?

what is an important date? Any national event. Just cos I don't care when Sweden's big events are doesn't mean you don't!

Weeks start on Monday, thats why Saturday and Sunday are known as the weekend. Oh no! I (and everyone else at work) finds calendars that start on Monday so irritating!

I also just had a thought - if we call this Kendokas of the World, we're basically shunting off Iaido and Jodo. Anyone else got a better name that's still self-descriptive?

And why can't I find my nail clippers? Why is life so unfair?
