Default Oh no, not that...
My period of mourning for Canada in the Olympics is officially over. I'm on-board with the steroids/epo/ephedra conspiracy theory.

Stern leads Canada past U.S. in WBC shocker

(edit: did anybody check that bat for cork?)

Weird tournament. Canada barely squeaked past South Africa yesterday and they were talking it up beforehand like they wanted to play the full 9 innings for the experience. I think they were planning to play their younger pitchers against the US, just assuming the loss so they could put their more experienced guys against Mexico and at least get out of the pool.

Oh, and... boo-yah!

Not in Nebraska apparantly, but a lot of places in the world think it's a pretty neat game.

As for Canada beating the US, well, goes to show that the format of the tournament at least produces excitement. Korea also beat Japan, which I suppose it fairly comparable.

In baseball, like kendo sometimes, on any given day anybody can win. Heck, even Ntherlands scored three runs against Puerto Rico. Big upset for Canada and Korea.
You know the best two in each bracket move up so the fat lady ain't here yet.

Indeed, got to hand it to team Canada, they definitely brought it yesterday. Loewen and Stern kicked butt.

First of all, isn't Nebraska the hosting place for the college world series finals? Or was recently anyway? They loves their baseball.

But I was actually happy to see Canada pull off a win like that. I don't want the U.S. to lose *any* tournament, but I do always appreciate watching a big underdog pull off a big upset. Plus it has to make some people reevaluate how much our MLB athletes get paid for what they do.

Of course I'm also hoping this wakes our boys up.

I think the only teams that don't have MLB players were china and taipei and they got spanked.

In the three-game first round of this tournament, the fate of Team USA no longer is in its hands. With Mexico having beaten South Africa last night, the U.S. would be knocked out if Mexico beats Canada today by the score of 1-0, 2-0 or 2-1 because fewest runs allowed in games involving the tied teams is the pool tiebreaker if three teams have a record of 2-1.

If Canada beats Mexico today, the U.S. and Canada advance. If Mexico beats Canada and scores more than three runs, Mexico and the U.S. go on. Both scenarios assume that Team USA beats South Africa tomorrow.

Just think, Taipai doesn't have to sneak older players into The Little League World Series anymore. The 18 year olds now have soemplace to play.

Yes, I meant the stars. Canada's team largely consisted of a bunch of minor leaguers.

edit: and Mexico is winning atm by a score of 9-1. Poor Canada...they beat up on the U.S. and they still might not go forward to the next round.

...and South Africa (17-0). Now, maybe we'll stop screwing around and play some real baseball.

Last time I checked The Netherlands were clobbered by a South American country. It's a sad day for baseball in Holland.
I hope that you're all happy now!
