Default Mad Cow in France
Hi folks! Hope this is the right place to ask. Only forum I'm on with European participation. Anyone hear if there are still any BSE (Mad Cow) issues in France? I might be there this October, and was wondering if the beef would be OK to consume. From what I understand, dairy is OK. Hope for some help. Thanks all!

Don't worry, there were issues in the past in Europe, but that was mostly cows from UK... I found an article stating that the disease is almost eradicated in europe, and that the Swiss organ for that matter will be dismantled at the end of the year.
Enjoy French beef ! you especially have to try "boeuf bourguignon", one of my favourites when cooked right.

Some friendly advice ChaShu... avoid the beef in France. It will only be disappointing compared to the stuff in Canada (in terms of steak). However, the cooking is much better in France which sometimes makes up for the relatively poor quality of the meat (boeuf bourguignon is a good example).

But on the whole, North American beef is much better qulaity then what they get in Europe, and incredibly cheaper.

By the way, I will also be in France in October and at this point I will be bringing my bogu.

But just as likely to be infected with BSE also!

French Beef is also just as likely to be organic rather that raised on Feedlots and pumped full of Steroids. Try it - the flavour will be different because the grass/grain will be a different variant.

Embrace change!

I've heard that the cows in France are only somewhat petulant at worst and most are just slightly pissed off. It is the populace that is seriously annoyed most of the time but hey, they are French.

Thanks for the info folks! I'm actually looking forward to the duck, pork, lamb and rabbit, but have heard great things about steak frites at thes informal places. Heard that cassoulet (sp?) and blanquette (sp?) are also quite good.

If you like cheese, France is the best.
For food, every region has it's own speciality. What's your destination?

Paris, for a week. And yes, I am looking forward to the head cheese. Also the dairy cheese (unpasteurised, mmm...) and the veal cheeks. I hear tete du veau (sp?) is quite interesting. Thoughts? Any nice bistros and brasseries to go to? We're looking to eat like locals, none of this tourist trap crap. BTW, what are the usual times for lunch and dinner, and for how long? When I was in Spain, it was 2:30-4:30ish for lunch and 9ish to later for dinner. France?
