I'm ready to get my zekken now but I have no idea what my name in japanese(katakana) would be. I tried some of the name generators on the net but I dont really think it translated mine correctly. Got advice?

Well I can only advise to call "e-bogu" about that. They are really nice and even send me my name in katakana via e-mail so I can have a look at the proper spelling. They have a form (PDF) that you can download and fill out. It usually takes 3-4 weeks for it to be delivered (it's being made in japan).

I heard that some ppl choose to come up with their own japanese "nickname" that when its pronounced, it sounds closer to your original name than doing a direct translation.

For example, my friend just left for japan in the JET program and his name is "Brunell" but he said when you translate it to katakana is just doesn't sound right. So hes going by "Buru". Would doing this be acceptable for kendo zekken?

Changing your name to something different so it doesn't sound funny when pronounced in Japanese is kind of pointless in my opinion. The main reason being that your name is what it is and you are going to have a bunch of people calling you one thing and the people who know your real name will be saying "who's that?"

Secondly, the Japanese language lacks certain syllables that other languages have. Just accept that things will sound funny, but that's life. Example, Ca ri fo ru ni ya vs California. Close enough.

Also, think of all the international people who get the pronounciation of their names butchered by English speakers. Now its our turn so just deal with it. At least everyone will know who you are, cause isn't that the point of the zekken?

Just one more comment...

So instead of people thinking your friend's name is Buruneru (Brunell), they will think his name is Buru (BLUE).

So who is Mr. Blue?

You can get as far as Kapprou - and what's the problem?

It might sound funny because "Kapplow" sounds funny, at least to me.

About the zekken thing, so what if your zekken says Kapprou in katakana. Mine sounds (something) like Dengerudesu. Now what do you think sound weirder, yours or mine? Thought so

No nicknames unless they sound really cool and you want to be associated with it the rest of your life or you could just use romanji.

That's probably what you'll get if you use those "Which anime character are you?" name generator.

lol... yeah 'Hara Kaito' doesn't seem right. 'Ka pu ro' would be what a couple of japanese friends said they would use... but they also said that you have a certain amount of flexibility and that there is not necessarily a single 'right' way to do it. There are certain rules but they weren't sure of them specifically so unfortunately I can't pass them on to you.

The point of the name is so that Japanese speakers can look at your zekken and read your name easily. Get a phonetic translation of your last name into katakana and use that. Are there no Japanese people in your club who can do this for you? If not, ask your supplier.

ok, i'm basing my comment on the fact that you are training in the usa. do you want your name in japanese or does your dojo require it? if you want it, well, i don't have any advice for you. however, if it is a requirement from your sensei then why not ask him or your sempai for help?

I see you're based in the US. You might want to try e-bogu. I got my zekken from them, and they were very thorough with the entire affair; even suggested alternatives so that I could decide what sounded best.

Edit: looks like someone already suggested that. Anyhoo...
