WOW. 85 bucks... I pay 25 a month, and that's just to the host gym. (i.e., instruction is free)

Good luck with your kendo. I would look for a different dojo. Do they charge you for instruction, or do you just pay the facility? If the later is the case, try asking your group about moving to a cheaper location. I'm sure they wouldn't mind saving 40-60 bucks a month.

Not trying to discredit your dojo or anything, but I don't see it on the AUSKF site. :/

from AUSKF:
ECUSKF
Indianapolis Kendo Club
IN
Contact: Young Park (317)897-100? MWKF
Purdue Kendo Club
West Lafayette, IN
Contact: Kerry Tamura (765)495-2961

From web site:

MUDOKWAN
8230 E. Washington St.
Indianapolis, In 46201
(317) 897-1000

With Young Park as the main contact.

Looks like the same guy so its probably legit. The Web site has not been updated for a while. It does look like a for profit Dojo though.

I think the Mudokwan dojo is run by Young Park who is listed by the AUSKF

Is this a Kendo or a Kumdo dojo you're going to? From my experience kumdo dojang tend to be a little more expensive (and by a little, I mean a heck of alot)

I cannot comment on the observation since I don't have much experience with it my self. I will say that he seems to be teaching Japanese arts exclusively. What’s not made clear is if he teaches all of these arts or if he has different instructors for each art.

US$85!!!! Holy Shinai, no wonder you can't afford it!! I pay AUS$25 floor fee per month at one dojo (if you only train a couple times that month it's reduced to $20) and nothing at the other one cos we get the venue for free. I pay $20 each semester for maintenance fee for the club bogu I use.

What does the $85 entail?

if those buddies of yours are good buddies, you might want to tell them your situation and tell them to back off.

if they are not very good buddies, just laugh it off and tell them you are rather busy now days. something about hungry bushi still has toothpick in his mouth and look full or something. no need to tell everyone about your personal situation.

if you have to have kendo right now, go and talk to the sensei directly. find a way around paying the due, and still do the kendo.

It's not a YMCA class My mistake then. Next question is why isn't it? I thought that Indianapolis had a YMCA club, so I looked it up. Sure enough, there it was on the MWKF site, taught by Sugawara sensei. If you are truly interested in kendo, I would suggest you look into it. If you aren't, then I think you should own up to it and stop making excuses.
