Hey guys. I was just looking at my Kendo uniform from last year and remembered there is a story to it, but I wanted to see if I could get details about it.
Apparently in Kyushuu there was a University Kendo club that were very strong, basically feared by other Kendo clubs. I think my Japanese uncle (who is a Kendo teacher) went to this University because he gave me the uniform. I know that it had a big reputation because everytime a Sensei saw the Kanji on the back of my Hakama they would be very impressed. Now they catch, apparently members of this University team did something so shameful that the Kendo club was shut down and no longer exists- does anyone know about this? thanks, Jieshi |

I am almost certain, but I think one of the sempais were abusing the kohai, like giving him a hard time after practice or something, kinda like the stupid initiation stuff you would do have to go through if you were a freshman in an American highschool/college football team. And the kohai died.
i stand to be corrected, |

Sounds like Kokushikan. They still have a club and are slowely building their reputation up again. Uchimura Ryoichi attended it.
I was/am interested in going there and asked my sensei about it. Essentially, there was a freshman who's father was a very famous sensei. So the sempai singled him out and were especially mean to him. One day, they ganged up on him, beat him, and stuffed him upside down into a folded mat where he suffocated. He was a very nice kid and the father's oldest son. That's the story. |

at least there's no "shootings" in Asian schools, or is there? And the Japanese fear of violence in other countries is irrational. I don't care if I get flamed for this, they are pretty clueless as to how the rest of the world is. To whoever asked about the punishment, they probably got a slap on the wrist like every other criminal in Japan. |

It seems to me that this sort of thing has the possibility of happening anywhere in the world, unless you can name a place that you know 100% doesn't have hazing. I would just let your intuition flow, listen and watch closely for the first sign of trouble, and be prepared to leave when you get that stimuli.

The kind where you're down on the ground, and a circle of angry young men kick the crap out of you while you are defenseless. What happened to the "kids" who did this and the sensei/trainers who were supposed to be managing the club? I'd assume kids got expelled and are serving prison terms and sensei/trainers have become pariah. Just wonder if the sensei/trainers were held responsible for this on a criminal level. I would think that as they are the ones who should stop this kind of behaviour, they would be held responsible.... This is the kind of stuff that terrifies me about sending my kids to Korea for school or sport... It's not Japan but the dynamics are pretty similar in this type of scenario.... |
