I saw the film today and was blown away. When it opens nationwide in February I would highly recommend that you all see it.
Kataoka Sensei (NYC Kendo nanadan) plays the fanatical Major General Hayashi whose character is important in the development of the General Kuribayashi character played by Ken Watanabe. I want to think that Sensei's true character rubbed off on Watanabe in his portrayal of Kuribayashi. |

Damn! Now I gotta go see it again to focus on Hayashi.
Seriously, though, the film is a powerful depiction of how helpless the ordinary man is when swept up in the insanity of war. Each character depiction was superb, poignant without being over-wrought. Besides Watanabe's Kuribayashi I especially liked Ninomiya's portrayal of Saigo - the Japanese "everyman". |

I saw this movie without realizing Kataoka sensei was in it. Is he the second one from the left in this picture?

Is this showing at mainstream theatres, or do I have to go to one of those theatres that shows independent and foreign films? |
