slate [sleit] verb
to say harsh things to or about
Example: The new play was slated by the critics.

ninjer [nĭn'jə] noun
A member of a forum believing themselves to be a member of a class of 14th-century Japanese mercenary agents who were trained in the martial arts and hired for covert operations such as assassination and sabotage, in order to distract themselves from the sad train wreck that is their daily life.

Does giving a lot of people affect one's rep or account in any way? I used to give negative rep to all the spammers until I realized there were too many of them

Take it away, and people will post without fear of reprisal.
What reprisal? Does something happen as a consequence of negative rep points? I guess I'm not familiar with how the system works, but what happens to someone who gets a lot of negative reps? Do they get banned? Or is this more of an informational feature?

I'd like to change my answer to keeping the rep system but only having positive rep. The value of the rep system is that new users can see instantly who are the elder statesmen of the forum, the people that generally offer good advice or are helpful. Usually you can only find that out by hanging around on a forum for a while to get a feel for who are the nice ones and who are the jokers and who are the trolls or misanthropes. Just a thought. I mean, the little green globes won't replace that, just might help.

Nothing happens to someone with a lot of negative rep, other than their little blob turning red. Maybe if you get more than 100 negative rep you get two red blobs? The titles that you see when you mouseover the blobs change, too.

The system is configured right now such that it's very difficult for any one person to give more than one negative or positive rep to another. You must spread some reputation around, as they say, you can only give so many per day, and there's a minimum post count before your comments even affect the number.

Looks like most people want to keep the system as is, with the addition of seeing who the culprits are.

I think it works quite well. People do seem to take it a tad too seriously sometimes though...

How about adding negative effects to negative reps.

For example if you have one red mark you are limited to one post a day.
If you get another red mark you can only post once a week.

You can do the oppostite with the postitive reps such as give the ability
to give threads stars and so forth.

Hey Neil,
Can you change it so that we can see the rep that we've given as well as what we've gotten? I've killed too many brain cells after practice over the years, and so have a hard time remembering where and when I've given out reputation.
