I'd like to change my answer to keeping the rep system but only having positive rep. The value of the rep system is that new users can see instantly who are the elder statesmen of the forum, the people that generally offer good advice or are helpful. Usually you can only find that out by hanging around on a forum for a while to get a feel for who are the nice ones and who are the jokers and who are the trolls or misanthropes. Just a thought. I mean, the little green globes won't replace that, just might help.

Nothing happens to someone with a lot of negative rep, other than their little blob turning red. Maybe if you get more than 100 negative rep you get two red blobs? The titles that you see when you mouseover the blobs change, too.
The system is configured right now such that it's very difficult for any one person to give more than one negative or positive rep to another. You must spread some reputation around, as they say, you can only give so many per day, and there's a minimum post count before your comments even affect the number. Looks like most people want to keep the system as is, with the addition of seeing who the culprits are. |

How about adding negative effects to negative reps. |
