Sounds to me like you need aikido lessons. They do say its a lot like dancing lol.
Seriously though, the irimi and tenkan entries used in aikido could be a helpful thing to know for this. Also aikido is meant to help your kendo (or so I'm told). Nakakura Kiyoshi (Kendo 9th Dan Hanshi) was at one time the son-in-law and designated successor of Ueshiba Morihei the aikido founder. He was known to say that aikido had been one reason for his success in kendo. Additionally, my own aikido sensei was taught by a man who was first and foremost a kendoka and discovered that aikido helped his kendo greatly. Coming from the other direction (aikido to kendo) as I am was confusing at first as I had a lot of body memory from aikido to deal with, for example I had to conciously make efforts to move in straight lines ![]() ![]() Best Mike |

Pete,
Unless you're working specifically on a taiatari drill, you might be able to ward off toe-to-toe contact if you extend your arms a little bit prior to the crash... I still get some toe-to-toe occasionally (even from 1dan+), but extending my arms a bit tends to make that happen less frequently. don't know if it'll help for you.. |
