it's ironic that this question should be brought up (as i was also pondering the same thing recently) to be honest, i think (sometimes) it's just another name for who's the judges fav pet. go ahead flame me.
i've seen people who fought their heart out but still didn't receive the "fighting spirit award" and then they award some other guy with the award (which at times introduced with quite the elaborance) and here's how my face goes>> |

What exactly are the accomplishments that merit this award? |

Wow! I can definitely see how it could seem pretentious. Sorry! My point was that the desire to win awards or other special merit is not why I personally practice Kendo. For example, one of the members mentioned that the Fighting Spirit award to was known as the "pity prize". While it may be true to some people, I guess I just cannot agree with that assessment. It somehow leaves a bad taste. Yes, It does feel good to get awards, but I have to ask of myself my motivations for wanting such awards. At the end of the day, I practice Kendo because I wish to be a better person. I do not wish to say that to think oppositely is bad. Perhaps as the other member stated, I'll feel differently if I win a few. Right now this is where I am with that. |

Erg. That was a bit of pedestal standing, wasn't it? I'll assume that it's some kind of award given at competitions to people who didn't necissarily win? I've never done the whole competition thing, so I really don't know... |
