Does anyone know right off hand how these cards are supposed to be used?
Serious question -- I know I'm teeing it up for some colorful answers, but I'd really like to know what the purpose of the cards is other than identification. "Are you an AUSKF member?" "Yup, sure am. Here's my card!" Ok, great. But what else might they be used for? Quick verification at tournaments/shinsa that membership is current? |

Rogers, yes the intent I believe is to have 'membership dues paid' proof at tournaments and such. I'm not sure such a plan has really been put into practice yet however. I can tell you the SEUSKF has considered doing something similiar but so far has not. A lot of the board of both orgs has stated their displeasure at people paying dues right before a promotion or tournament so they can play, instead of supporting their federation all year long. For the member federations (such as the SEUSKF) paid membership roles give us votes in the national org and people that wait to pay right before a promo in the fall don't allow their local federation to have their membership counted (if anyone follows what I am trying to say).

The ID number is a permanent record of your involvement in AUSKF. As Ignatz said, it doesn't mean you're a current member. However, if you have allowed your membership to lapse, paying your dues will not get you another ID card, just will update AUSKF records that you have paid up. Other than that, there is no proof that you are paid up.
If someone enters a shinsa and passes, I'm pretty sure that AUSKF will do a cross check on their membership status before they issue a menjo. They've done a massive overhaul of their membership database, and while it may seem trivial, it is one way of keeping people from 'cheating' by taking an exam and not be currently up-to-date with the AUSKF. JMHO. |

I'm hoping mine will serve as a "get out of jail free" card, or better yet, "stay out of jail" card, if I am ever stopped by police asking why I'm carrying around "sticks" or a shinken. |

We had about 4 cards with misspelled names on them, and I really hope they don't chalk it up to "illegible handwriting" or something that will force the local federation to pay $5 for the hassle of having it replaced.
It was really odd.... because I got the cards as well as some menjos at the same time. One kid had his name correctly on the menjo... "XXXXX Thornton" ... the AUSKF card reads "XXXXX ThornTAS" Sensei's card is wrong, too... The list I sent in (I write very carefully with all capital letters) had it "HARRY DACH" ... it comes back "HARRY HYE DACH" .... go figure... I'm wondering, though... with the unique member # and such.. just how important it is to have the names corrected... Part of me says "pretty important if they decide to fall back on the membership # when they print menjos in the future" and another part of me says, "No big deal".... Thoughts? |
